"That machine's jaws look like they could swallow me whole."
―Aloy

The Widemaw is an Acquisition class machine in Horizon Forbidden West. It disperses fertilizer pods among the lands which help the soil. It sucks up the soil with its vacuum and dispenses it out the other side. After digging enough, it will jet flames around its body and dispense pods that have resources.

Widemaws have existed in the Forbidden West since before the Derangement began[1].

Widemaws were encountered by Aloy multiple times in the Forbidden West, particularly near coastal areas and in smaller water bodies. She fought two Widemaws in Cauldron MU.

Appearance[]

The Widemaw is similar in appearance to a hippopotamus. The main head of the Widemaw is huge, with a mouth filled with small spikes that will split into four segments when fully opened. The bottom jaw contains large, retractable, drill like tusks, and the "throat" is a massive vacuum unit. It has a massive Purgewater sac on its underbelly, and two Sparkers hidden just above. On its hindquarters, there are four vacuum turbines, two on each side, and two resource containers placed vertically at the center. It is covered with white armor everywhere but its underbelly, and its eyes are similar to a Trampler or Stormbird.

Behavior[]

Widemaws are usually found in groups along bodies of water, where they turn ground and plants into Metal Fertilizer Pods, which they eject as they move. According to the Utaru metalweaver Kue, these pods are made of the strongest metal he has ever woven.[2]

Abilities[]

The Widemaw can easily pull in any threat with its vacuum tube, and its jaw is able to chomp anything flat. Its backside isn't safe either, as the turbines can do the same thing. It can easily pull together massive mounds of dirt into a rock, then reverse the vacuum's direction to shoot it a long distance.

During combat, Widemaws can enter an overcharge mode by inhaling a Metal Fertilizer Pod. This state lasts for 30 seconds and boosts damage by 25%, along with increasing their attack speed and range. Visually, it is represented by their tusks and vacuum unit glowing red along with fire and steam coming out of vents on its body.

Weaknesses[]

The Widemaw's sole elemental weakness is against Purgewater.
