What Was Lost is a side quest in Horizon Forbidden West.
Synopsis[]
Inspired by the Zeniths' usage of cybernetic implants, Kotallo wishes to build himself a new arm: GAIA predicts that the necessary data and materials can be found inside Ninmah Research Lab. Kotallo asks Aloy for her assistance, knowing she is more familiar with ancient tech. While Aloy worries the Zeniths may still be observing the facility, she agrees to help.
The two meet at the base of the lab and enter together. Following GAIA's prediction, they first check the chamber where Aloy found Beta. Aloy retrieves a database containing the relevant information from the chamber's console, but she and Kotallo are suddenly ambushed by Specters. After dispatching them, the two head to the second floor to find the necessary components. With Kotallo keeping a lookout, Aloy locates the components. She supplies them to Kotallo, and the two agree to meet back at the Base later.
Once Kotallo has finished the new arm, he asks Aloy to help him test it. At his request, Aloy meets him nearby the site where they took down Regalla's Tremortusk, although he remains sparse about the details. When pressed by Aloy, Kotallo cheekily replies that this is his revenge for Aloy taking her time to tell him about her plan for The Bulwark. When they reach the site he intended, however, he reveals his plan: to test the arm against a Scorcher that has been menacing the Sky Clan.
The test proves to be a great success, and the Scorcher is soon vanquished. However, after pulling the Scorcher's heart from its chassis, Kotallo removes the arm. He explains that his injury has become a part of who he is, and it feels like a disguise to hide behind the arm. Kotallo resolves to use the arm when he needs it, but otherwise he will remain himself, a sentiment Aloy readily accepts.

Trivia[]
- Completing this side quest awards the trophy "Aided Kotallo".
- After completing this side quest, the Scorcher Heart will be placed in the Base's dorms as a trophy from Kotallo. Kotallo's arm will be present in the Base's Rec Room for as long as Kotallo is inside.
