Weapon Techniques are a gameplay mechanic introduced in Horizon Forbidden West. These are abilities tied to each weapon type that are like special moves or a secondary fire mode for the weapon.
Acquisition[]
Weapon Techniques are unlocked in the skill tree using skill points. Once unlocked, that technique is available for all weapons of that type. Only one can be equipped at a time, though it can be switched in the weapon wheel if more than one Weapon Technique is available for the weapon type.
Some Weapon Techniques use the weapon's currently selected ammo, while others use a unique ammo that may deplete the currently selected stock of ammo.
Weapon Stamina[]
All Weapon Techniques require stamina to use. By default, Aloy starts with 100 stamina and it regenerates at a rate of 1 per second, though both can be increased by skills. There is also a regeneration delay of 3 or 6 seconds, depending on if the stamina gauge is empty or not.
Besides being depleted from use, on difficulties at Normal and above, stamina will be drained from taking damage (up to 15% total stamina). The Stamina Drain status effect will prevent stamina from regenerating along with draining any remaining stamina.
Damage[]
Weapon Techniques that use a unique ammo type will have their damage and buildup scale, depending on the rarity and how much the weapon has been upgraded.
