Veterans are members of the Tenakth tribe who were given to the Utaru tribe to work as military advisors.
History[]
Early in their history, the Tenakth were envious of the Utaru's seemingly endless source of food and tried to invade Plainsong, but the Utaru were able to hold them off using Plainsong's dishes for safety. Eventually, the two tribes were able to reach a truce and a peaceful exchange,[1] whereby the Utaru paid a yearly tribute of food from their rich farmlands to the Tenakth in exchange for peace between the two tribes. Over time, the practice morphed into an exchange of people, as the Tenakth needed able-bodied youth to fight during the Clan Wars and the Utaru needed soldiers to train the defenders of Plainsong. These soldiers given to the Utaru became known as Veterans.[2] However, Zo offers a slightly conflicting account of this practice: stating that the practice started with the Tenakth relinquishing one of their own to the Utaru from the start.[1]
Despite living among the Utaru and being treated as such,[2] Veterans themselves are not considered to be Utaru, nor are they considered to be Tenakth anymore.[3] They also sometimes face harassment from the Tenakth, seeing them as "washed up farmers".[4]
The practice of exchanging people was abandoned a few years after the Derangement. There are very few Veterans remaining,[1] with some Tenakth believing none remain.[5]
Attire[]
While they retain the tattoos and sometimes face paint from their time among the Tenakth, Veterans wear Utaru outfits. However, their tattoos appear to be fading, likely due to age.
Veterans lack the traditional seed pouches that Utaru wear from shortly after birth, instead wearing objects resembling seed pouches, made of machine parts and woven plant fibers. While no attention has ever been given to them, these hybrid pouches may symbolize their dual heritage as Tenakth adopted into Utaru culture.
Known Veterans[]
Trivia[]
- Some generic Utaru NPCs in Plainsong and Riverhymn wear identical outfits to Jaxx and Ziverra, including the non-standard seed pouches which are unique to these two outfits. The non-standard seed pouches being present is likely simply a result of character assets being reused for generic NPCs, but could also indicate that these random Utaru are also Veterans.
