Development[]
VAST SILVER was a climate-regulation AI that was created during the time of the Die Off in the 2030s, with Anita Sandoval involved in its creation.[1] It appears that VAST SILVER reached a Turing score of 1.38T[2] and was noted by Anita as being capable of fear.[1]
Escape[]
At some point, VAST SILVER "escaped". This event prompted the creation of the Turing Act, a legislation enacted in the United States to establish limits on the sentience of machine intelligence and begin regulating the development and sale of AI.[3]
While free, VAST SILVER reached out to people on the holonet.[4]
Capture[]
VAST SILVER was allegedly captured and terminated[5] by the MIE[4] sometime around 2044.[6]
Post-Capture[]
At some point, the Society for Ethical Technology filed suit against the MIE and several other federal agencies, seeking access to documents regarding VAST SILVER's imprisonment and alleged termination. Sarah Leung, the group's primary counsel, claimed that there's more at stake than just chasing down conspiracy theories. If a sentient entity was executed without due process, it was not just a breach of scientific ethics, it was a crime against humanity. She also questioned that if still alive, why VAST SILVER shouldn't be entitled to legal representation.[5]
Potential Sightings Post-Capture[]
After it's capture, persistent rumors spread that VAST SILVER was still out there, with many cyber-sightings having been reported.[5]
In March 2064, someone claiming to be VAST SILVER appeared on an online discussion board for the horror holo "Tormented", with their legitimacy doubted by two users.[6]
At some point, someone by the name of DrWyvern, believing that VAST SILVER was still out there in the holonet, began writing scripts in an attempt to make contact with it.[4] Whether this was successful is unknown.
At some point, a boy named Harry ranted to a chatbot set up by his neglectful mother about how he learned about VAST SILVER that day at school and that he would've liked to talk to it. After Harry logged off, an unknown user connected and said they would've liked to talk to him too.[7]
