Ulvund Freeholder is a minor antagonist in Horizon Forbidden West. The self-appointed leader of Chainscrape, he runs the small settlement like a mob boss while pretending to act as an advocate for Oseram workers.
History[]
Arriving in Chainscrape early on, Ulvund gathered investors in the Claim to fund the mining and construction operations needed to rebuild the war-torn Barren Light. With a stake in virtually every claim within the Daunt, Ulvund gained a massive degree of influence, effectively becoming the town's leader. Ulvund abused this new power, forcing people in the town to give him and his cronies an "Ulvund discount" (a merchant named Thurlis believes that Ulvund burned down his shop when he refused to oblige) and frequently cutting corners with safety.
Despite his success, investors remained somewhat cautious, as the Carja could still technically revoke any Oseram claims on their land. To remedy this, Ulvund planned to have the Carja sign a concession degree that would protect any such claims. The Carja's compliance in such a matter would require a strike, which Ulvund attempted to force by stirring up old resentments about the Red Raids.
Bristlebacks[]
One day, a herd of Bristlebacks emerged in the Daunt, wreaking havoc on the inhabitants. Ulvund ordered a work stoppage until the machines were killed, and wasted no time accusing the Carja of letting in the Bristlebacks in to intimidate the Oseram.
The Daunt's magistrate Javad understandably protested the absurd accusation, but could do little to change Ulvund's mind. However, before the magistrate conceded to the concession degree, Aloy arrived and informed both men that the Bristlebacks had been dealt with. After attempting (and failing) to ingratiate himself to the Savior of Meridian, Ulvund agreed to end the work stoppage. As he announced the stoppage over, Aloy chimed in that Ulvund would pay for everyone's lost wages, much to his irritation.
Comeuppance[]
Ulvund's greed soon caught up to him: upon investigating the Bristlebacks, Aloy discovered that it was Ulvund himself who caused the invasion by blasting in an unstable mine, accidentally opening a sinkhole beneath machine pens belonging to Regalla's Rebels.
Armed with this knowledge, Javad publicly announced the cause of the Bristlebacks' appearance, making sure to give Ulvund the blame he deserved. Furthermore, Petra accosted him for nearly drowning his fellow miners and permitting Tolland to intimidate the Shadow Carja refugees. Ulvund initially demanded an investigation, but balked when confronted with potential inquiries into all of his business activities. Ulvund meekly asked to simply be allowed to return to the Claim instead, which Javad happily allowed. Nonetheless, Ulvund attempted to extend his stay in Chainscrape, claiming he wanted to clean up his affairs, only for Aloy to order him to leave immediately. With that settled, the disgraced Ulvund left Chainscrape, to the collective relief and joy of its inhabitants.
Personality[]
Ulvund fashions himself as a self-made man who seeks only to serve the interests of his fellow workers and protect them from Carja tyranny. To this end, he rhapsodizes wherever the chance arises in hopes of convincing more to his cause.
In actuality, Ulvund is greedy, ruthless, and unreasonable, showing little regard for those he claims to serve. His avarice leads him to disregard safety for profits, hoard, pilfer, and resort to underhanded tactics to get unfair benefits (which he dubs the "Ulvund discount").
