To The Brink is the third main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

Synopsis[]

Aloy arrives at the lift providing entry into the Daunt. Karhn, the operator for the lift, initially resists bringing her down, as the valley is infested with machines and he is under strict orders not to operate the lift until he receives the all-clear from the nearby settlement Chainscrape; however, Aloy pushes through and he relents.

On the way down, Karhn explains that a herd of Bristlebacks, a non-native type of machine, appeared in the Daunt a day ago, and Chainscrape's (self-appointed) boss Ulvund, has declared a work stoppage until the machines are dealt with. At the base of the lift, Aloy encounters Studious Vuadis, the Sun-Priest in charge of running the Embassy, along with his escort Joruf, a member of the Vanguard. Vuadis is refusing to proceed to Barren Light until the valley has been cleared of Bristlebacks. Joruf informs Aloy that Vuadis had earlier sent Erend and another Vanguard to clear the way ahead and points her to their last known location. He also advises her to upgrade her bow in Chainscrape and craft Acid Arrows as they will come in handy against the Bristlebacks. Vuadis attempts to take the lift back to the top of the ridge, but his way is blocked by Aloy, who has Joruf escort him to Chainscrape instead.

Upon entering Chainscrape, Aloy is greeted by an old friend – Petra Forgewoman. Excited to see Aloy, Petra immediately attempts to rush her to the town's tavern. However, after learning that Aloy has matters to attend to elsewhere, Petra lets her go, but she does invite her to come to the brewery and share a drink when she has the chance to. Aloy then goes to the settlement's hunter shop. The shopkeeper denies her service in light of the work stoppage, but he does allow her to use the workbench to upgrade her bow. Aloy then sets out for Erend's last known location. On her way there, she comes across an Oseram trapper named Thurlis cornered by Scroungers. After she dispatches the machines, Thurlis gifts her a Shock Tripcaster in gratitude and informs her that Erend and the Vanguard have gone southwards. Following their tracks, Aloy eventually finds Erend battling machines while his companion is lying wounded on a nearby watchtower. Erend is distracted after seeing Aloy, allowing a Bristleback to charge at him and knock him over. He quickly retreats to the top of the watchtower while Aloy handles the machines. As Erend and Aloy catch up and he learns of her intention to go into the Forbidden West, he is frustrated by her insistence on going alone, already hurt that she left Meridian without a goodbye after the Battle of the Alight. Aloy can explain her position to him in three ways. Regardless of her choice, Erend accepts her explanation. He and his companion then go to Barren Light to recover, and Aloy continues to clear the valley.

Hearing distant explosions, Aloy follows the sound to a nearby quarry, where she helps Oseram workers dispatch the last of the Bristlebacks. Having cleared the valley, she returns to Chainscrape and demands Ulvund blow the whistle and end the work stoppage. He initially insists on an investigation to confirm her claims, but Aloy stands her ground and he complies. As he declares the work stoppage over, Aloy chimes in that he would personally pay every worker's lost wages, much to his irritation.

With the valley cleared, Vuadis can finally proceed to Barren Light, but he refuses and demands to be escorted by his full retinue. Joruf ignores him and heads for Barren Light anyway, leaving him with no choice but to follow.
