The Wings of the Ten is the sixteenth main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

Synopsis[]

After leaving Tilda's Mansion, Aloy contacts Erend via Focus, who is both startled and relieved to hear her voice. She promises to meet at him at the Base as soon she can.

Back at the Base, Aloy's friends are mourning Varl's death while arguing about the best course of action: Kotallo and Zo insist that they must fight back, only to be reminded by Erend and Alva of how hopelessly outnumbered and outmatched they are by both Regalla's Rebels and Far Zenith. Their conversation is interrupted by Aloy's arrival. Relieved to see her alive, Zo rushes in for a hug. Aloy then explains the circumstances of Varl's death at Cauldron GEMINI and how she survived because Tilda turned on the other Zeniths to save her. She declares her plans to defeat the Zeniths and retrieve Beta and GAIA, but not before putting an end to Regalla's rebellion. She allows Kotallo to go to the Memorial Grove and stand with Chief Hekarro in anticipation of the rebels' final assault, similarly telling the rest of her friends to make the final preparations for the coming battle against the Zeniths. Zo asks Aloy to meet her outside the east exit of the Base, where Varl was laid to rest, for a private conversation. There, the two fondly remember Varl, and Zo reveals she is pregnant with his child, having planned to tell him after getting back from their mission at Cauldron GEMINI. As Zo finishes singing an Utaru grave song for Varl, Aloy bids him farewell and promises to look after the others.

Aloy heads back inside the Base to craft the override Beta gave her earlier, then climbs up the mountain above the Base to override a Sunwing. After successfully overriding the machine, Aloy takes to the air and contacts Tilda via Focus, who instructs her to override the Tallneck in the Shining Wastes to send out a pulse to activate the Horus EMP energy cells in the region and sends her the necessary software to do the job. After successfully sending out the activation pulse, Aloy flies to a Horus chassis in the nearby mountains and gathers its energy cell before flying towards the Memorial Grove to confront the rebels. (Note: after mounting the Sunwing, Aloy is unable to land or dismount from the machine until after she delivers the payload.)

At the Memorial Grove, Hekarro's forces have been all but defeated, until Aloy swoops in and drops the EMP energy cell on the battlefield, disabling all of the rebels' overridden machines and allowing the loyalist Tenakth to turn the tide of battle. Inside the palace, the rebels have Chief Hekarro and two of his Marshals cornered above the Arena. Regalla is about to kill the Chief, but falters when one of her rebels runs in and informs her that all their machines are down. Moments later, Aloy flies in and challenges her to single combat. Regalla accepts and Hekarro officiates the duel. After a brutal fight, during which they progressively descend further down into the Arena, Aloy emerges victorious. By Tenakth law, Regalla's life now lies in her hands. Should Aloy choose to execute Regalla, Kotallo will run a spear through her. Alternatively, if she chooses to spare Regalla, Aloy offers her a more 'suitable' death by allying with her against the Zeniths and sending her to the Base to await the battle.

A Tenakth soldier arrives and whispers a message to Marshal Ivvira, who promptly calls Aloy and Hekarro to the throne room for an urgent matter. There, Tenakth soldiers bring in a Sons of Prometheus agent who surrendered to the guards outside the Grove. He claims to have a message from an "interested party" and hands Aloy a Focus. At her request, Hekarro orders the room cleared so she can view the message privately. He also offers to help her with her mission as gratitude for saving his tribe, but she declines and urges him to build the peaceful future for the Tenakth that he has always hoped for. Instead, he presents her with either the Tenakth High Marshal armor or Regalla's bow, depending on the player's choice regarding Regalla's fate, and they part ways.

When Aloy scans the Focus given to her by the agent, Sylens appears via hologram and chides her for ruining his plans of defeating the Zeniths with the help of the rebels, sarcastically congratulating her on "saving the Tenakth for a few weeks" while also dooming the entire planet. After a brief argument, he demands that Aloy tell him about her alternative plan, but she only agrees to do so face-to-face, at her base, and with his weapon. Not bothering to hear his answer, Aloy crushes the Focus to end the conversation, knowing that Sylens has no choice but to accept. She contacts Tilda, informing her that Sylens is on board and instructs her to head to the Base.

With the rebels defeated, Aloy returns to the Base to begin preparations for the final assault against the Zeniths.

Trivia[]

  • Completing this quest awards the trophy "Flew on the Wings of the Ten".
  • With the ability to fly a Sunwing now available, some locations of the map become accessible, and it's possible to resume some side quests such as First To Fly that may have already been started. Some otherwise-impossible-to-reach greenshine locations also become available, and while it remains quicker to use fast travel to go between the mainland and the Isle of Spires, the Sunwing now presents an alternative.
  • Most side-quest interactions with Tenakth NPCs will include additional dialogue referencing Regalla's defeat if undertaken after completing this quest.
  • Unless the mount is later destroyed, this should be the only time Aloy has to approach and override a Sunwing in order to fly one. Hereafter one can be summoned from the item wheel.
  • Defeating Regalla does not completely remove the Rebel threat. Any outstanding rebel camps and outposts can be completed after (indeed, Aloy can now deploy a horus energy cell if the player desires). Random ambushes and encounters may also still occur, with the rebels sometimes referring to Aloy by name and calling for revenge. If Regalla survives, Aloy won't mention this to her at The Base.
  • New Game+ players, as they already have Sunwing override, have this ability temporarily disabled until the override takes place in-mission. Aloy (and others) still react as if this is their first time flying. Some missions, originally tended to be done after this quest as the require flight, might have already been completed, though some side quests, such as Shining Example, only trigger once Wings of the Ten is completed.
