The Promontory is a side quest in Horizon Forbidden West.
Synopsis[]
Aloy overhears an argument between two Chorus members (Fane and Kel) and a man named Bree: Bree's wife Kalae, the newest member of the Chorus, went missing after leaving to the Promontory to undertake an old initiation ritual. Having found Kalae's instrument at the base of the Promontory and her dye at the top, the search party concluded that Kalae fell from the Promontory into the river below. Bree demands that Kalae's body be found so he can bury her seed pouch in Plainsong, but the Chorus refuses to search further. Aloy promises to find Kalae's seed pouch to give Bree closure.
Upon arriving at the start of the Promontory, Aloy notices a tree at the base: if Kalae had indeed fallen, she would have been caught in its branches. Aloy's suspicion only grows as she ascends the crumbling trail to the summit, finding it odd that a woman capable of climbing the treacherous path would fall to her death at the top. Aloy eventually finds a trail the search party missed: some of the dye Kalae had mixed, leading into a separate clearing. In the clearing, Aloy finds the body of Kalae and another woman: Kalae was evidently strangled by the attacker, who was later killed by a machine while she tried to hide the body. That machine, a Stalker, emerges from camouflage and attacks Aloy.
After killing the Stalker and the ones that come after, Aloy takes the seed pouches from both women and returns to Plainsong. She shares her findings with Bree and Fane: the latter realizes the attacker's seed pouch belongs to Kel's apprentice, and Kel was seen leaving the gates an hour earlier. While the Utaru gather the guards, Aloy heads to Summerwind, Kel's childhood home, to search.
As expected, Aloy finds Kel there, and the woman confesses to having Kalae murdered, in order to prevent her ideologies from spreading among the tribe. When Aloy tells her she will pay for her crime, Kel reveals that has already poisoned herself, dying just as Bree and Fane arrive. While Bree is angered that Kel cannot stand trial, he is content that his wife can rest in peace. Fane swallows his pride and thanks Aloy for uncovering the conspiracy.

Notes[]
- Aloy's choice in the flashpoint with Kel will determine the fate of Kel and Lyna's seed pouches. If she picks either the heart or brain option, Fane will have the seed pouches sent down the river as per Utaru custom. If she picks the fist option, Fane will burn the seed pouches. In either case, Fane can be found outside of Plainsong as he tends to the pouches' fate.
