"An ancient ruin... turned into a Tenakth stronghold?"
―Aloy approaching the Grove

The Memorial Grove is a settlement in Horizon Forbidden West. It is the capital of the Tenakth tribe, and serves as the foundation of their culture.

Description[]

The Memorial Grove is situated roughly at the intersection of the three clans' territories at the northeastern corner of the Raintrace. The Grove serves as the Chief's stronghold, and is home to him, the Marshals and the Chief's Guard.

Within the Grove are the Visions, holographic rendering of the Ten that serve as the basis for Tenakth mythology and material culture. As such, the Grove is held by all Tenakth to be sacred, and is indisputably the most important site in the tribe. The most esteemed Tenakth are granted burial within the Grove.

The Tenakth have made the overgrown ruins their own, carving the stonework with their designs and adorning it in the blue and white colors of the chief.

Directly adjacent to the Grove is the Arena and a similarly named settlement, in which controlled battles against machines are held.

History[]

Old world[]

The Memorial Grove was originally the Mojave Battlefield Memorial Museum, a museum dedicated to the Battle of the Mojave. Featured heavily in the museum was JTF-10, and many of the holographic exhibits paid tribute to the squad's actions.

Tenakth and the Clan Wars[]

Centuries later, the ruins of the museum was discovered by those who would become the first Tenakth. By that point, many of the holographic displays had begun to deteriorate, resulted in glitched, incomplete renderings of their former selves. From these renderings, which the Tenakth deemed "Visions", the tribe formed the basis of their culture, dedicating themselves to emulating "the Ten". Three clans were formed, each of them drawing inspiration from a certain Vision for their homeland, way of life, and clan markings.

However, the clans fought among themselves for control of the Grove, with all three deeming it holy ground. Thus began generations of bloody, perpetual war among the clans. Countless Tenakth fought fruitlessly for control of the Grove, with none ever taking control. Over time, the Visions inevitably continued to falter, with the Chaplains passing their messages down through oral tradition as best they could.

An era of peace[]

After generations of war, the Lowlander Hekarro did what no other Tenakth could and conquered the Grove. It was on that very day that GAIA received the Extinction Signal, and self-destructed to stop HADES from wiping out life on Earth. The subordinate function AETHER escaped self-destruction and took refuge in the processing core beneath the Grove, triggering the exhibit of Anne Faraday's call for peace and unity in light of war. Hekarro alone witnessed this, and was profoundly changed by the Vision he saw. From that day forward, Hekarro dedicated his life to fighting for peace, and eventually united the warring clans together under an uneasy peace. As such, the Grove once again was a crucial catalyst in the history of the Tenakth.

Rebellion[]

The Grove was visited by Aloy, who had come in search of AETHER, and was granted an audience with Hekarro. They ultimately came to a bargain where Aloy would assist Kotallo in getting the Sky Clan to send contenders to the Kulrut and defend it from Regalla's Rebels, and in exchange, Hekarro would grant her access to AETHER.

The Grove would later become a battleground between Hekarro's loyalists and Regalla's rebels, during which much of the structure collapsed during the fighting. Just when Regalla had disarmed Hekarro, Aloy, who was holding up a fighter jet with her rope, signaled Kotallo to tackle the Chief out of the way before she released it. As Hekarro's forces regrouped, Regalla was forced to retreat, vowing to return with the full force of her army.

Having achieved victory, Hekarro formally ordained the surviving Kulrut contestants as Marshals. Subsequently, after Aloy removed AETHER from the basement, it inadvertently triggered the same Vision of Faraday Hekarro once saw, inspiring his loyalists to salute him and affirm their commitment to his cause. This also had the effect of repairing the Grove's faltering Visions.

Regalla would later make good on her word and launched an all-out assault on the Grove, once again becoming on the verge of killing Hekarro, had not Aloy flew in on a Sunwing and challenged her to a duel in which the huntress prevailed.

Trivia[]

  • The Memorial Grove is very similar to Meridian in being the stronghold of a tribe located on the edge of a jungle (the Raintrace in the Grove's case, The Jewel in Meridian's case).
