The Kulrut is a main quest in Horizon Forbidden West. It becomes available after The Broken Sky and must be completed before Faro's Tomb. It is the second quest required for the recovery of AETHER.
Synopsis[]
Aloy goes to the Memorial Grove to meet with Chief Hekarro. As per their previous agreement, he tells her to join Dekka at the north barricade to defend the Kulrut. With the Sky Clan now participating, and the defenses readied for an attack, the Kulrut begins. The audience is cheering as it starts, and it is announced that those who defeat a machine and come out alive shall be declared Marshals. The machines tied up in the Arena are then let loose, the contestants leap into the Arena, and the battle begins.
As Hekarro had predicted, Regalla and her rebels quickly attack the Arena's defenses with an army of machines, including Ravagers, Clawstriders, Plowhorns, Scrappers, and a Rollerback.
After the first wave of machines is defeated, the rebels bypass the defenses with an overridden Rockbreaker, tunneling straight into the heart of the Arena, allowing them to pour out of the hole and storm the Memorial Grove. Aloy tells Dekka to hold the defenses and races back towards the Arena, sliding in just before the entrance is blocked by falling rubble.
As the rebels battle with the loyalist Tenakth, Regalla spots Hekarro and Kotallo retreating back into the palace and pursues them. Aloy attempts to go after them, but her way is blocked by an attacking Slitherfang. She and a Lowlander named Ivvira work together to take it down, with Ivvira firing at it from above with a ballista while Aloy fights it on the ground. After the machine is destroyed, Aloy heads inside the palace to stop Regalla.
All over the Grove, the rebels and Hekarro's soldiers are locked in a brutal fight while the walls around them crumble, with Regalla personally dueling the Chief. After Hekarro is distracted by a falling jet, Regalla manages to overpower him and throws him to the ground. However, before she can land the killing blow, Aloy arrives just in time and uses the pullcaster to redirect the jet to fall in between them, and Kotallo rushes to pull the Chief out of the way. The arrival of the remainder of Hekarro's soldiers forces Regalla to retreat, but she vows to return with everything she has. In recognition of their bravery, Hekarro names all the surviving contestants of the Kulrut as Marshals and assigns them their first order: clear the Arena of any remaining rebels.
Her end of the deal fulfilled, Aloy is allowed by Hekarro to enter the basement beneath his throne and take what she needs. When she retrieves AETHER, she inadvertently fixes all the damaged Visions throughout the Grove and causes the original Vision that inspired Hekarro many years ago to appear before the assembled Tenakth. Equally inspired by the Vision, all those present rally around Hekarro and salute him.
Kotallo tells Aloy that he wishes to join her on her mission. She instructs him to go to the mountains west of Plainsong, where Zo (or depending on the story's progression, Varl) will meet him at the ascent and guide him to the Base.
Aloy returns to the Base and merges AETHER with GAIA. Depending on the progression of either The Sea of Sands or Seeds of the Past, GAIA may tell Aloy that she has detected a distress signal from ELEUTHIA in the mountains northwest of the Base and urges her to investigate. Having been included in the briefing by GAIA, Erend and Varl accompany Aloy.
