The Dying Lands is the sixth main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.
Synopsis[]
Two days after her tumultuous escape from LATOPOLIS, Aloy wakes up in a panic in Stone's Echo, a nearby Utaru outpost. She is calmed by Varl, who tracked her from Barren Light and carried her to safety.
Once Aloy calms down, Varl takes her to see an Utaru Gravesinger called Zo. They find her singing to a dying Plowhorn. Talking to Zo, Aloy learns that the Plowhorn is worshiped by the Utaru as a 'land-god'. Using her Focus, Aloy identifies and removes a faulty part of the Plowhorn (called Re by the Utaru), easing its pain.
Convinced of Aloy's ability, Zo tells her of a sacred cave near Plainsong, the Utaru capital, that has been producing dangerous machines ever since another one of the land-gods, Fa, entered it. This is only adding to the Utaru's problems: the Red Blight is causing a food shortage, and Tenakth rebels and machines have forced them to abandon most of their settlements. Aloy makes plans to travel to Plainsong, confident that MINERVA is somewhere inside. Zo, however, insists she stay at Stone's Echo to heal. Varl and Zo venture to Plainsong to convince the Chorus, the Utaru's body of leaders, to grant them access to the cave.
Upon her arrival in Plainsong, Aloy meets with Zo and Varl before talking to the Chorus. The Chorus refuse to allow Aloy access to the cave. They maintain that there is no point in fighting the machines or fighting the Blight, as death is part of the 'grand cycle'. Aloy grows impatient and argues with the Chorus. Suddenly, a large explosion sounds from near the cave. As Plainsong deteriorates into chaos, Aloy, Zo, and Varl, unanimously agreeing the time for permission is over, make their way to the cave.
Along the way, they fight many dangerous, black-armored machines, which Aloy's Focus identifies as 'Apex' machines. After defeating them, they arrive at the entrance to the cave. Within it, Aloy finds a door similar to that of a Cauldron. Before overriding it, she gives Zo a Focus, insisting that she will need it to understand what is inside.
Entering the Cauldron, the trio fight many apex machines before eventually reaching the core. There, they find the body of Fa, modified into a combat machine called a Grimhorn. HEPHAESTUS, recognizing the intruders, activates Fa, who attacks them on sight. A horde of machines arrive to protect Fa.
After defeating the Grimhorn and its protectors, Zo kneels beside Fa's body and grieves for her. Seeing her distress, Aloy offers Zo a chance to return home, but she decides to stay and fight for Aloy's cause. Aloy then attempts to override the core. HEPHAESTUS sends a powerful electric charge through the core in an attempt to stop her, but she pushes through, finally forcing it out of the Cauldron.
