The Daunt is a Sundom region in Horizon Forbidden West.
Geography[]
The Daunt is a relatively narrow valley framed by towering cliffs, with a river snaking through it. Entry from the east is controlled by a single hand-operated cable car, while the western edge ends at the border fort of Barren Light, marking the western border of the Sundom, where the Daunt opens up to No Man's Land in the Forbidden West.
The Daunt is located roughly two weeks away from Meridian on foot[1] or about two days on the back of a Charger.[2]
History[]
In the Old World[]
The Zion Lodge in the Old World,[3] located in what would become the Daunt.
The Daunt is located in what the Old Ones called Zion National Park in Utah.[3]
In the New World[]
Sun-King Iriv attempted to explore the Daunt in his attempt to follow the sun to the west, but failed thrice. While he and his group finally broke through on their fourth attempt, they were never seen again. For this reason, Iriv's successor Basadid declared the lands beyond the Daunt "the Forbidden West", marking the western end of the Daunt as the western edge of the Sundom.[4]
Several generations later, during the infamous Red Raids, the Daunt served as the point of entry into the Forbidden West for Jiran's armies. While the exact time of construction is unclear, six Signal Towers, along with the border fort Barren Light, were constructed before, if not during, the Red Raids. In the latter years of the war, the Daunt became the site of the Carja's greatest defeat in the Battle of the Daunt. In a devastating assault, the Tenakth, along with some Utaru fighters, chased the Carja out of the Daunt completely, and left Barren Light destroyed. After the battle concluded, the Tenakth and Utaru returned to their respective territories.[5][6]

At some point after, the Daunt was reclaimed by the Carja. To improve relations with the Tenakth, the Carja agreed to fully demolish the Signal Towers, and began repairs to Barren Light.[7]
