Dominance. That is what the Bulwark impresses on those who dare approach. If the wall itself isn't impressive enough, its elaborate decorations make it seem like a jagged, stone colossus. I know a few things about instilling fear through ornamentation and I've come to distrust rulers that believe it necessary. Paired with the wariness of my devoted escorts and their stories about Commander Tekotteh, I resolved to take whatever awaited us with a splash of salty brine.
I should've lowered my expectations even further. We'd been told that a rudimentary lifting device grants entry to the top of the Bulwark. But when we arrived, the Sky sentries yelled down to us that the lift was broken. If we wanted to come up, we'd have to climb.
I grew up on a mesa, so I'm not afraid of heights and not the worst of climbers, but I had to admit that this was... discouraging. Can't imagine how teeth-grinding it must've been for my companions, with their innate loathing for the Bulwark - and the clan it protects. I took them a few steps back to convince them (and myself) that we had no choice but to see it through.
When we finally pulled ourselves onto the highest ridge, our muscles were overstrung and our skin freezing. All around were Sky Tenakth brandishing their weapons, training or sparring. And there, on the edge of a jutting rock that towers over the Capital's center, stood a smirking Tekotteh. With a booming voice, he welcomed the "Carja Marshal" and "his Lowlander bodyguards."
I looked back at the lifting device. It didn't take an Oseram to see that there was nothing wrong with it. So yes, my escorts were right. Tekotteh is a pompous bag of boar shit.
