"The lesson will be taught in due time, Aloy. Until then, we wait."
This article contains heavy spoilers for Horizon Forbidden West. Read ahead with caution.

"Thunder roared from the east, and a bolt of blue struck this place. That chamber."
―Hekarro

The Broken Sky is a main quest in Horizon Forbidden West. It is one of three quests that can be completed after The Eye of the Earth.

Synopsis[]

Aloy follows AETHER's coordinates to the Memorial Grove, an ancient ruin turned into the Tenakth capital. At the gates, a Chaplain named Dekka recognizes her and escorts her to meet Hekarro, Chief of the Tenakth, teaching her about the Visions of the Ten along the way.

Arriving in the throne room, Dekka tells Aloy to wait while she summons the Chief. Aloy uses this moment of privacy to scan the environment with her Focus and locates AETHER underneath the throne. Dekka returns with Kotallo in tow, who tells Aloy that he will see her soon, and the two leave the room. Moments later, Hekarro emerges from behind the throne, and he and Aloy exchange recognitions. He initially believes that she has come to pledge her services to him, only for her to correct him that she's looking for AETHER. He recognizes it when she speaks of it, although he is unaware of its true nature. Nonetheless, in this he sees an opportunity to recruit Aloy's services. Despite her initial reservations, Hekarro's clever convincing eventually gets through to her. With most of his Marshals dead following the attack on the Embassy at Barren Light, he needs to appoint new ones in a trial-by-combat called the Kulrut. In exchange for access to AETHER, he requests that Aloy go north and force the commander of the Sky Clan, Tekotteh, to send contestants for the tournament and help defend it in case of an attack by Regalla's Rebels. Hekarro tells her to meet up with Kotallo in the northern village of Stone Crest, where he will guide her to the Bulwark, the Sky Clan's capital and his former home. On her way out, Aloy speaks again with Dekka, who arms her for the journey ahead and provides her with directions to Stone Crest and information about the road.

Arriving in Stone Crest, Aloy finds Kotallo solemnly watching rebels herding overriden machines in the valley below the village. After he reluctantly answers her questions, they set out for the Bulwark, either killing or evading any rebels they encounter along the road.

At the base of the Bulwark, Kotallo sounds his horn to request access. After he speaks some sort of code with the guard, the lift is lowered, and he and Aloy are raised into the settlement. On the way up, Aloy notices a piece of Old World weaponry sticking out from between the boulders. Inside the Bulwark, Kotallo and Aloy are jeered by the onlookers, particularly Kotallo for his missing left arm, as they make their way to the commander's room. Inside, Tekotteh welcomes Kotallo's return with a snide remark. Despite all their attempts, Kotallo and Aloy are unable to convince him to send his challengers for the Kulrut, as he believes himself safe behind the Bulwark. When Kotallo insults him, they are kicked out of the room. Out of options (and with permission to do whatever is necessary), Kotallo plans on killing Tekotteh, but Aloy ignores him, much to his frustration. Remembering the piece of Old Ones weaponry she saw earlier, Aloy returns to the bottom of the Bulwark and scans it with her Focus, revealing ancient debris buried beneath the rock. Climbing up the wall to search for the debris, she enters a cave behind a waterfall, where she finds a tank with an intact power cell, a weakness she can exploit. She returns to Kotallo and shares her plan with him. Though he is initially both doubtful and dismissive of her plan, he reluctantly agrees to help when Aloy reminds him it was part of his orders.

Kotallo and Aloy search the valley for rebel camps, finding one to the northeast where they see rebels outfitting an overridden Tremortusk for combat. Aloy kills the machine while Kotallo handles the rebels. She then detaches a Plasma Cannon from the Tremortusk's corpse, and Kotallo volunteers to carry it back to the Bulwark.

Back at the Bulwark, Aloy uses the cannon to fire several shots at the wall, destroying the rocks covering the tank. This alerts Tekotteh and his men, who promptly arrive at the scene and mockingly warn Kotallo and Aloy to stop embarrassing themselves and leave. Aloy gives Tekotteh one final chance to answer Hekarro's call and send the challengers. His attitude unchanged, she fires one more shot, igniting the tank's power cell in a large explosion. Tekotteh and his men barely manage to retreat to safety as part of the wall crumbles beneath their feet. Forced to accept his new vulnerability, Tekotteh begrudgingly agrees to send the challengers. With the mission successful, Kotallo returns to the Memorial Grove to report to Chief Hekarro, and promises to see Aloy again at the Kulrut.

Trivia[]

  • More information about the ancient debris buried beneath the Bulwark can be found in the datapoints Did We Just Bomb Yosemite? and Airstrike Request.
  • Although assigned a lower player level than the other two, and technically closer to The Base, due to the fact the AETHER recovery mission involves not one but two quests, and this also progresses the rebels storyline, from a narrative perspective it makes sense to undertake this quest after recovering POSEIDON and DEMETER.
