Designated as Regional Control Center 9, the facility was intended to be staffed by ELEUTHIA-9 graduates to oversee terraforming operations.[1] Designs for the facility were made by Zero Dawn staff,[2] one of the staff being Ethan Reed.[3]

In the New World[]

Regional Control Center 9 was successfully constructed by GAIA's machines. However, as the children within ELEUTHIA-9 were never educated, nor ever brought to the Regional Control Center, the facility remained vacant for centuries.[1] While the facility remained fully functional, dust and dirt did gather within, likely due to a ruptured ventilation system.

Escaping GAIA's self-destruction,[4] MINERVA took refuge within the Regional Control Center.

Events of Horizon Forbidden West[]

Aloy and MINERVA

Aloy meeting MINERVA within the Regional Control Center.

After forcing HEPHAESTUS out of Repair-Bay TAU's core,[5] Varl, Aloy, and Zo headed deeper into the facility, which connected to the Regional Control Center. However, MINERVA attempted to imprison them inside the facility by initiating the facility's lock down, but Aloy would track down MINERVA inside the system core of the facility. MINERVA attempted to deny Aloy access to the root kernel console, but the Nora huntress managed to reason with the AI, before the rogue AI was reverted back to its basic programming, thus rebooting GAIA and absorbing MINERVA into it.[6]

Varl, Aloy, and Zo were gradually joined by more allies throughout their journey and would embark on many campaigns from the Base.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Once Aloy's group learned of Nemesis and the danger it would inevitably pose to Earth, Erend, Zo, Kotallo, and Alva left the Base to reach out to their respective tribes and garner forces to prepare for Nemesis' arrival.

First Level[]

Main Hall[]

The main hall was originally intended as the main gathering space for the operatives of the Control Center. As the game progresses, it become more heavily decorated with plants and rugs of Utaru making brought over by Zo (much to Erend's annoyance). The rest of Aloy's friends add their personal touches as well, including a fragment of the Bulwark collected by Kotallo,[13] flowers brought over by Talanah,[14] and a scroll of Studious Vuadis collected by Varl, among other things.

The Base east exit

The Base's east exit, leading to Plainsong.

The Base west exit

The Base's west exit, leading to the Clan Lands.

The corridor leading east into Plainsong is symbolically decorated with Utaru wares; likewise, the corridor leading west into the Clan Lands is decorated with Tenakth armory and heraldry. What used to be a bar in the main hall is repurposed by Varl and Zo to serve as their workstation, while Erend can often be seen in the lounge area, practicing with his Focus and playing Machine Strike with Aloy here until his departure.

Gathered Supplies

The Gathered Supplies chest.

After completing the first subfunction retrieval quest, a special chest becomes available to Aloy from which she can withdraw a large number of resources; the chest replenishes periodically. After Singularity, Beta will be found standing by the bar instead of in the basement.

Not all rooms, amenities and functions are immediately accessible to Aloy, as they are unlocked by GAIA as the quests progress.

Aloy's Room[]

Aloy's necklaces

Aloy's necklaces in her room.

Originally one of the office spaces within the facility, this room was repurposed into a private room for Aloy, where she keeps many of her personal effects, including Elisabet's pendant (which she can occasionally interact with to ruminate about recent experiences), her old spear that Rost made for her, and the necklace given to her by Rost. Her stash is also located here.

Archive Room[]

Originally intended as a training room for advanced training modules on the terraforming system, this room was repurposed by GAIA as an archive room to store all the data collected by Aloy through her journey. Alva spent most of her time studying this archive.

Varl and Zo's Room[]

Originally one of the office spaces within the facility, this room was repurposed by Varl and Zo to serve as their private room.

Kotallo's Room[]

Originally intended to serve as a recreational space for the operatives of the Regional Control Center, this room was repurposed by Kotallo to serve as his private room. GAIA repurposed the holographic displays to monitor the activities of Regalla's Rebels in the region. The shelves in the back of the room show all Strike pieces purchased or won by Aloy.

There's a ventilation shaft in the back of the room that leads into a secret office; the shaft does not appear on Aloy's Focus. Aloy opens the vent as usual using her Pullcaster, opening a corridor that leads to an office that was designed by Ethan Reed, a member of the facility's design team, as a tribute to his son August.[3] A second passage from this office leads to a secret door into the Sleeping Quarters (see below).

Sylens' Room[]

The Base fabrication terminal

The Fabrication Terminal.

Originally intended as a laboratory to oversee the machine repair operations in Repair-Bay TAU below the facility, this room was later repurposed as a workshop for Sylens, where he perfected the secret weapon he used to disable the Zeniths' shields. This room also contains a fabrication terminal where machine overrides can be restored and a workbench.

If AETHER is the first subordinate function to be retrieved, Kotallo will initially be located in this room before his room is unlocked.

Tilda's Room[]

Originally intended to oversee the facility's massive seed banks, this room was briefly repurposed as a room for Tilda, where she kept a holographic copy of Vermeer's Woman Reading a Letter.

Sleeping Quarters[]

Alva, Erend and Kotallo sleep here. Each have decorated their respective bunks with their personal effects and trophies, including a Scorcher Heart collected by Kotallo[15] and ale barrels brought over by Erend from Chainscrape. Erend also stores a fragment of Asera's armor here.[16] Directly adjacent to the sleeping quarters is a kitchen and a bathroom. A secret passageway to the office linked to Kotallo's room connects to the rear of the quarters, though it initially can only be opened from the passageway side after accessing the secret corrditor from Kotallo's room.

GAIA's Chamber[]

Accessible via a staircase going up from the main hall, GAIA's chamber is where Aloy and others can converse with the AI and receive quests from her. A console in the room can be used to store and retrieve data and images from collected Survey Drones; which unlocks upon delivery of the first subordinate function.

This room is able to project room-wide holograms, used by GAIA to help explain things to Aloy, as well as project the view of the Survey Drones.

Second Level[]

The Basement[]

Located directly underneath the dome, The basement was originally intended to serve as a Server Room where the immense amount of data received from the terraforming system would be stored. One of the rooms in the basement was used by Beta as her private space (and is initially locked by GAIA at Beta's request, though it is opened after Beta is abducted), and another room contains a console that would record operation logs of the Repair Bay below the Control Center. A ventilation shaft in the third room leads to the location of a secret room at the very back of the facility. If Regalla is spared and joins Aloy's team, she will briefly use this area as her private space, as well.

Maintenance Space[]

Located on the left side of the stairs leading into the basement, two power cells can be found here, one of which must be used to obtain the Repair Bay Log datapoint.

Secret Room[]

Locked behind a code-locked door, members of the Control Center's design team left personal records in this room as a memorial of themselves for future generations to find. It can be accessed by crawling through the ventilation shaft in the basement.

Third Level[]

Directly adjacent to the Repair-Bay, this flight of stairs that controls access into TAU is only accessible during The Eye of the Earth.

Outside[]

Immediately outside the eastern entrance to the Base, Zo establishes an area for Utaru meditation; it later becomes the area where Varl was buried.[17] The same entrance also has a campfire.

Trivia[]

  • The Regional Control Center is inside what the Old Ones called Hayford Peak in Nevada.
  • Like most other settlements/locations, Aloy can quick travel to the Base without cost from campfires, however she does not spawn inside the Base, but near one of the campfires located closest to it: one is right outside the eastern entrance, while is other to the west is some distance away at the base of the mountain.
  • Based on dialogue, Talanah will visit the Base when Aloy isn't present more than once (as Kotallo mentions seeing her, even if Erend mentions Talanah’s name visit before Kotallo joins).
