Squirrels are a species of wildlife in Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds and Horizon Forbidden West.
Squirrels in Horizon Zero Dawn don't appear to exactly resemble any known squirrel, with their light body with a notably darker colored tail making it somewhat resemble the American red squirrel, a widespread species found across North America. Meanwhile, squirrels in Horizon Forbidden West resemble the eastern gray squirrel, native to the eastern USA and southern Canada.

Squirrel zygotes were among the animals that were successfully collected before the Faro Plague eradicated the species and stored within ARTEMIS for later use in Project Zero Dawn.

Despite not being among the animals listed by Charles Ronson as a pioneer organism,[1] squirrels were released into the wilds, becoming common in the forests of the Cut, the Daunt in the Sundom, and No Man's Land. Whether they are indeed pioneer organisms and were released under GAIA's orders or were released by ARTEMIS during its independence is unknown.
Behavior[]
Squirrels are docile and quick to flee upon detecting Aloy. They tend to run among tall foliage, which can make them difficult to keep up with, or escape by climbing up into trees.

Squirrels are the only source of Squirrel Bones and Skin in Horizon Zero Dawn.
