Spike Throwers are a ranged weapon type in Horizon Forbidden West, which launches Spikes.
Description[]
Spike Throwers are close to mid-range weapons that use a launcher to throw a Spike. Because they are affected by gravity, they must be thrown at a higher angle to compensate for targets further away. Because of the buildup to launch a Spike, they have a slow rate of fire and cannot be used while jumping, sliding, or crouching. In order to penetrate armor, Spike Throwers must be thrown at full draw. Fully drawn Spikes will also travel faster and further.
With the exception of the Drill Spike, none of the spikes are capable of Tear damage, meaning they will only destroy components rather than remove them.
By default, all Spike Throwers have a base 15% chance of landing a critical hit that deals 30% more damage. Spike Throwers capable of Overdraw also gain a 15% damage bonus along with 50% improved knockdown power. They will also suffer a 25% Impact damage penalty when thrown uncharged.

Trivia[]
- According to the official guide released by FuturePress, Spike Throwers deal 50% more damage from crits, which conflicts with the 30% listed in-game.
- Elemental spikes are the only elemental ammo type that does considerable more elemental damage than buildup. This makes plasma and fire spikes effective at dealing damage if a machine is weak against the element.
- The Spike Thrower is based off of an ancient weapon system called the spear-thrower or atlatl which was invented before the bow and arrow.
