- "We defend the path to the mountain, where the Wings of the Ten shall find us."
- ―Sky Clan slogan
The Sky Clan is one of the three clans of the Tenakth tribe featured in Horizon Forbidden West. They inhabit the Sheerside Mountains, a mountain range in the northwest of the Clan Lands.
History[]
- "During their war, the Ten climbed sheer rock, braving blinding snow and wind."
- ―Dekka
The Sky Clan have grown through the inspiration of the Gold Mountain Vision in the Memorial Grove, a hologram that was heavily distorted, making it appear to be describing warriors who could "outlast any climb" and "defend the mountain." The Sky Clan's capital, the Bulwark, withstood numerous assaults throughout the Clan Wars.
The Clan Wars[]
From what little is known regarding the specifics of the Clan Wars, the Sky Clan fought against the Lowland Clan for control of the Stand of the Sentinels, a forest in between the two clans' primary territories.[1] By the end of the Clan Wars, the Stand of the Sentinels was under the control of the Lowland Clan.
On August 26, 3020,[2] the then-Commander of the Lowland Clan, Hekarro, conquered the sacred Memorial Grove in a decisive victory. At the same time, AETHER arrived in the Memorial Grove as it escaped GAIA's self-destruction, triggering a Vision never before seen by the Tenakth. Believing it to be a message from the Ten, Hekarro united the clans, ending the Clan Wars.[3]
The Red Raids[]
The Sky Clan fought against the Carja during the Red Raids.[4] When Hekarro led the united Tenakth and some Utaru fighters to Barren Light to get their vengeance, Kotallo of the Sky Clan scaled the walls around Barren Light to infiltrate the settlement and open the gates, allowing the warriors from the Forbidden West to raze Barren Light and chase the Carja out of the Daunt completely. Thanks to his role in the battle, Kotallo was welcomed home as a hero.[5]
Regalla's Rebellion[]
Under the command of Tekotteh, the Sky Clan initially refused to get involved when Regalla's rebellion began, including refusing to send Sky Clan representatives to the embassy with the Carja, although Marshal Kotallo was able to gather some and go anyway. Overly confident in the security of the Bulwark, Tekotteh planned to watch in safety as Regalla and Hekarro weakened each other and then snatch the Chiefdom from the weakened victor.[4] As such, he refused to send challengers for the Kulrut when Hekarro called for them.[6] However, the Easterner Aloy and Kotallo eventually forced Tekotteh to submit by destroying a portion of the Bulwark.[7] Like with the other two clans, some members of the Sky Clan sided with Regalla and left to join her rebellion.
Society and Culture[]
The Sky Clan prides themselves on their defensive capabilities, utilizing the mountainous terrain of their home to their advantage: their settlements are frequently built in the shelter of cliffs and mountain tops, most of them within the Bonewhite Tear, providing them precise control of entry and egress.
The outfits, face paints, and settlement decor of the clan have all drawn inspiration from the glitched hologram that has inspired their lifestyle. Unique among the Sky Clan is a penchant for stonework, which lavishly adorns their settlements and trail heads.
March of the Ten[]
The March of the Ten is an initiation ritual for Sky Clan soldiers. It consists of climbing a mountain slope west of the Bulwark, traditionally (but not necessarily) with a partner, and retrieving the Blood Crest flower from the summit. The March is considered the Sky Clan's most difficult trial, being situated along one of the toughest slopes in the clan's territory.[8]
The ritual has its roots in a climb performed by two JTF-10 members known only as Sueiro and Hodgins. During the Hot Zone Crisis, the two climbed up the mountain together in order to signal reinforcements against federal drone strikes. While the finer details have been lost to the Tenakth, most of the key aspects of the ordeal have been retained in the tribe's oral history.
