Shadow in the West is a side quest in Horizon Forbidden West. It is automatically given upon completing Shadow from the Past. Alternatively, this quest can be triggered by coming across Shadow's Reach and speaking with Yef.
Synopsis[]
After confirming that a pocket of Eclipse cultists have gathered in the West in an attempt to rebuild their army, Aloy heads for the coordinates uncovered at their hideout in the Daunt.
Following the coordinates, Aloy arrives at a hideout in the southwest mountains of No Man's Land among the wreckage of a battle of the Old Ones. There, Eclipse cultists oversee the construction and fortification of the hideout by Utaru slaves, with Overridden machines prowling as sentries. Defeating the cultists and machines, Aloy approaches an Utaru prisoner named Yef, who explains that cultists had been abducting Utaru from the edges of Plainsong, forcing them into labor. He himself had been abducted weeks ago when he had wandered too far from Plainsong seeking more food and entertainment.
Yef then informs Aloy that inside the hideout are more Eclipse, machines, and deadly weapons, although he is unable to elaborate on the specifications of the weapons. If Aloy wishes to continue further on, she'll have to climb over or find a break in the scaffolding. Although eager to exact his revenge on his captors, he relents when Aloy tells him to stay behind, bidding her luck.
As Aloy enters the hideout and defeats another wave of cultists and machines, Vezreh recounts his visions for the cult over broadcast. Seeking out the cultist leader, Aloy then enters the ruins. Upon entering, she discovers a holding cell filled with Utaru captives. Releasing them, she instructs them to find somewhere safe to hide. Continuing on, Aloy confronts Vezreh. Recognizing her as the one that thwarted their attack on Meridian and the Spire, Vezreh unleashes an Overridden Ravager to take her down. Using the various Acid containers and environmental traps to her advantage within the enclosed space, Aloy manages to defeat the Ravager and the Ravager Cannon wielding-Vezreh. Determined however to take her down with him, Vezreh detonates a series of bombs within the space, triggering an explosion and cave-in.
Dusting herself off, Aloy finds Yef outside Vezreh's chambers. While pleased to see that the hideout has been destroyed and Vezreh defeated, he is concerned that more cultists are on their way. Aloy then enters Vezreh's chambers, scanning the datapoints he left behind. Finding nothing to suggest that the cultists have spread further, Aloy confirms that the threat is finally over[note 1]. Reassured that they are finally safe, Yef and the liberated captives choose to remain at the camp to gain their strength before returning to Plainsong.
