The Ropecaster is a ranged weapon type in Horizon Forbidden West.
Description[]
The Ropecaster can be used to temporarily take enemies out of the fight so the player may focus on others, or immobilize a machine so that it is easier to target its weaknesses. It is most effective when used against larger machines, such as the Thunderjaw. Depending on the size of the target, the type of ammo used, and the Ropecaster type, it may take several shots before it is successfully pinned. In order for the rope to penetrate armor, the Ropecaster must be fully drawn.
New to Forbidden West are elemental ropes and canister harpoons. Elemental ropes have weaker binding power compared to normal ropes, but can inflict elemental buildup on the target. Canister harpoons cannot bind targets, but instead attaches an elemental canister to them for 30 seconds before falling off. It can then be set off by a corresponding elemental arrow and trigger an explosion.
By default, Ropecasters capable of Overdraw increases the damage and binding power of Binding Ropes by 15%, while Canister Harpoons remain attached twice as long.

Trivia[]
- The tutorial entry on canister ropecasters mentions the existence of a pure explosive canister that is nowhere seen in the base game. They would finally make an appearance in The Burning Shores.
