LAS VEGAS - January 18, 2049 - Members of UNITY-47 this morning smashed several Ridotto dealer bots at the High Note casino, protesting what they call "invasive automation." Vegas police together with casino security squashed the protest in minutes, taking 14 unionists into custody.
"AI is taking away our livelihoods," union spokeswoman Shannon d'Oliveira said. "Over the past decades, human slot attendants, poker clerks and hostesses have all faded out. But we draw the line at table game dealers, as no robot has the fine-grained emotional skills of a human being."
"We understand the workers' concerns about ongoing automation," the High Note's legal advisor Lynn Frazier told VBC yesterday. "But we cannot tolerate rioting, especially when it distracts players on the casino floor."
Complicating the matter are concerns that organized crime groups are funding the protests. "The mob stands to lose its grip on gaming once our services reach full automation," Frazier tells reporters. "With the anti-automation protests going into their second week, you have to wonder who is behind it all."
