"We here at Far Zenith believe: escape the inevitable. And so we reach for the stars."
Osvald Dalgaard

Reach For The Stars is the first main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

Synopsis[]

In the six months following the Battle of the Alight, Aloy has been searching for a backup of GAIA in order to repair the terraforming system. With the emergence of a poisonous Red Blight and increasingly powerful storms, the extinction of life looms ever closer. However, Aloy's efforts have failed to recover a backup, and she has exhausted all but one of her leads.

Varl, who has been tracking Aloy since her departure six months prior, reaches her just as she prepares to enter a ruin, one she hopes has a backup of GAIA. When Varl insists on staying to help, Aloy hesitantly gives him a Focus, slowly introducing him to its function and her objective as they catch up. While exploring the ruin, Aloy and Varl come across the bodies of dead Oseram delvers, having evidently been killed by machines. Aloy uses their salvaged equipment to craft the pullcaster. The ruin is revealed to be a launch facility belonging to Far Zenith as part of their efforts to build a human colony in the Sirius system. Through a datapoint, Aloy learns of a Data Center within the ruin, a shuttle launch pad, which she deduces must contain a backup of GAIA.

Aloy and Varl make their way to the Data Center through the ruins, engaging Burrowers and Scroungers along the way while being crept over by Slitherfangs, the same ones that killed the Oseram delvers. Arriving at a meeting room, they view a hologram detailing Far Zenith's plan to steal a copy of GAIA. After Varl is confused by Aloy's striking resemblance to Dr. Elisabet Sobeck, she explains to him the circumstances of her birth and the true nature of GAIA, leaving him with more questions than answers.

Finally outside the ruins, Aloy and Varl watch as three Slitherfangs squabble over a piece of debris beneath the launch pad. With no way to fight or sneak past the machines, Aloy devises a plan to collapse the shuttle and crush them under its massive weight. After using the pad's control console to release the clamps holding the shuttle in place, she climbs up the launch pad and manually shoots its cable connectors, just barely jumping to safety as the shuttle collapses, instantly killing two of the three Slitherfangs. Having survived the collapse, the third Slitherfang attacks Aloy while still being trapped under the rubble before breaking free soon after. Once the machine is destroyed, Aloy's way to the Data Center is clear.
