The Ravager is a machine in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.

History[]

A Ravager in the wilds.

A Ravager in the wilds.

At the advent of the Derangement, almost all machines started becoming increasingly aggressive towards humans. In addition, HEPHAESTUS began manufacturing Combat Class machines designed for the sole purpose of combating humans in an effort to cull their population.[1]

Ravagers can be found in the northern Sundom, the southern Claim, the northern Clan Lands, and the southwestern Burning Shores.

Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds[]

A group of Ravagers, Scrappers and Watchers at the Banuk Encampment were made non-aggressive by a signal emitted by component of GAIA Prime nearby. However, when the component stopped functioning, the machines returned to their hostile behavior and attacked the Banuk and Aloy, who destroyed them.[2]

The Carja criminal Ranaman used a machine lure to call a Ravager and two Watchers to his father’s estate to kill his father and sister Daradi so that he could inherit the estate as the only surviving family member. His father managed to lock Daradi in the larder to save her life before being cut down by the Ravager’s cannon; it also killed all of the guards. Under Ranaman's request, Aloy killed the Ravager and Watchers.[3]

In order to get Hawk Talanah of the Hunters Lodge to sponsor her as her Thrush, Aloy was tasked to collect two Ravager Trophies.[4]

Aloy encountered Ravagers while infiltrating Cauldrons RHO[5] and XI.[6] When she overrode RHO's core, she gained access to the information needed to override Ravagers.[5]

After Aloy and Erend fought off the Oseram mercenaries that ambushed them at the Dimmed Bones, they left a lure that attracted two Ravagers, which they were able to destroy as well.[7] Later on, while investigating Dervahl's camp, they found two Ravagers chained down, along with other machines. Upon noticing the intruders, the Oseram in the camp freed the machines to help them fight the intruders, although they simply attacked all humans present. The Oseram at the camp and their machines were eventually destroyed by Aloy, Erend and their Oseram allies.[8]

When Aloy was captured by Helis and taken to the Sun-Ring in Sunfall, Sylens broke into the Sun-Ring with two overridden Striders and three Ravagers to save Aloy, leaving the Ravagers to fight the Corruptors that Helis had sent to kill Aloy.[9]

With the spreading of corruption in the area west of Maker's End, two Ravagers and a Fire Bellowback became corrupted. They were subsequently destroyed by Aloy.

The Sun Furrows Hunting Grounds use Ravagers in all three of their trials, utilizing them in various ways, such as wielding the Ravager's cannon, taking down Ravagers in specific ways, or using them to destroy Thunderjaws.[10] The Snowchants Hunting Grounds also use Ravagers in their trials.[11]

Corrupted Ravagers were among the machines used by the Eclipse to attack Meridian to allow HADES access to the Spire. The corrupted Ravagers were destroyed by Aloy and some Oseram wielding Oseram Cannons.[12]

Sometime between Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West[]

While the circumstances of how are unknown, Aloy lost the ability to override Ravagers, as well as most other machines.

Horizon Forbidden West[]

The Arena at the Memorial Grove use Ravagers in their battles, one of which known as 'Challenge 2: Machine Reinforcements' requires hunters to kill a Ravager and a Longleg in a single fight, while another known as 'Grim Prospects' had hunters kill a Ravager and a Grimhorn in a single fight.

Vezreh, the new leader of the Eclipse in the Forbidden West, used an overridden Ravager as a bodyguard. However, they were both killed by Aloy when she broke into their base of Shadow's Reach.[13]

A new model of Ravager, the Apex Ravagers, were released into the wilds alongside their regular counterpart sometime after Apex machines were first released from Repair-Bay TAU.[14]

Ravagers, Fire Fanghorns and Apex Burrowers were kept in a pen by the residents of Arrowhand for later looting, which Aloy and Drakka came to do.[15]

Overridden Ravagers were among the machines used by Regalla's rebels to attack the Kulrut, but they were held back by Aloy, Dekka and several Tenakth soldiers until a Rockbreaker burrowed into the Arena underground, opening a safe passage for all the rebels and machines past the defensive wall.[16]

Wanting to use Ravager Cannon to build a set of armor, Handa hired Aloy with a contract to hunt a Ravager and retrieve its cannon for her, which Aloy successfully did.[17]

Aloy encountered more overridden Ravagers under Regalla's rebels' control in some of their outposts, including those at the Dry Yearn[18] and the northern Stillsands.[19]

Ravagers were among the machines HEPHAESTUS sent after Aloy while trying to escape her in Cauldron GEMINI, but she was able to destroy them all.[20]

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores[]

While searching for some missing Quen, Aloy took down a herd of machines, including Apex Ravagers.[21]

Appearance []

Ravagers have a similar appearance to Sawtooths: heavyset at the front, with a large, broad chest, neck, and shoulders, powerful legs and no tail. However a Ravager’s chassis is leaner, and more closely resembles that of a large dog, although not as canine in appearance as that of the Scorcher. Additionally, instead of the metallic longitudinal crest of yellow-tipped spines seen on the backs of Sawtooths, Ravagers have a rapid-fire energy pulse cannon, dubbed a Ravager Cannon. The Ravager can swivel this weapon to aim it. The Ravager is quadrupedal, with clawed feet and a head with a toothy snout. Unlike the Sawtooth, its armor plating overlaps across its head, shoulders, back, and front legs. This increases the armor’s effectiveness. A canister of Chillwater is ensconced in its chest, in a similar manner to a Sawtooth’s Blaze canister. This is possibly used as a coolant. Similar to the Sawtooth, this canister is exposed initially, but will be covered in armor plating once it evolves.

Behavior[]

Ravagers are virtually exclusive to the arid regions of the Carja Sundom north of the Carja capital Meridian. They also roam the deserts of the Tenakth Clan Lands. They are deployed either as protection for herds of terraforming machines, or to patrol near established human travel routes, especially in areas where herds of terraforming machines work. It may be surmised that HEPHAESTUS deploys them in this manner to deter humans from entering areas where herds are working. Ravagers attack humans on sight, opening fire with their cannons before the human even comes close enough to be engaged with melee attacks. If the cannon is disabled or removed, for example via Tearblast Arrows, the Ravager becomes more aggressive with its melee attacks.

Abilities []

Ravagers employ their cannons to attack at range. Up close, they employ the same ferocious melee attacks as a Sawtooth. Additionally, Ravagers employ a defensive electric attack against enemies within a specific radius. However, like Sawtooths, they are vulnerable to weapons that utilize fire.

Trivia[]

  • As with Sawtooths, if Ravagers are significantly damaged, they will begin limping, holding up one of their front paws in a manner similar to cats.
  • If the Ravager's cannon has taken significant impact damage, its rate of fire is reduced. This does not effect the weapon if it is detached picked up by Aloy, where it returns to its base rate of fire.
