General Herres explaining the futility of attempting to hack the Faro Plague.[1][2]
- "If we had their deactivation codes, we could shut them all down. The entire swarm. But since their cryptographic protocols use poly-phasic entangled waveforms, cracking a code set would take half a century."
- ―General Herres[1][2]
Poly-Phasic Entangled Waveforms are an advanced quantum[3] encryption technology designed by Faro Automated Solutions and used by the cryptographic protocols of the Chariot line of combat robots, making their systems so secure that it would take decades to hack into them.[2]
History[]
In the Old World[]
Poly-phasic entangled waveforms provide a level of security that was beyond military grade and was considered "Black Quartz standard".[3] Encryption protocols using poly-phasic entangled waveforms are virtually impossible to hack into within a reasonable amount of time, with estimates concluding that it would take half a century to break in.[2]
The Faro Plague[]
This system of protection was installed in the Chariot line. This, combined with the complete lack of backdoor in the code on Ted Faro's insistence,[3] and their biomass conversion capabilities to fuel themselves if needed,[4] made the robots almost impossible to stop. However, when a glitch within a swarm[5] owned by the Hartz-Timor Energy Combine[3] severed chain of command and caused them to begin attacking everything around them and replicating out of control,[4] there was nothing FAS could do stop them due to their inability to install a new service pack update.[3] As such, the swarm, later known as the Faro Plague,[2] began destroying the biosphere and stripping Earth bare.[4]
With no way to stop the Faro Plague, and at best 16 months before annihilation by the robots,[2] Project Zero Dawn was hastily put together, with the subordinate function MINERVA designed to brute-force the deactivation codes for the Faro Plague and shut them all down[6] using waveform broadcast towers,[7] then the rest of the subordinate functions would work together to terraform Earth back to a liveable state.[6] This was ultimately successful.
In the New World[]
With the poly-phasic entangled waveforms now cracked, MINERVA's systems can be used to reactivate and deactivate the Faro Plague on demand.[8]
Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West[]
It appears that the Chariot line robots' near-immunity to hacking due to poly-phasic entangled waveforms also protects them from being overridden, or being affected by corruption or berserk ammo.
