Dr. Patrick Brochard-Klein was a member of Project Zero Dawn, serving as the Alpha in charge of the ELEUTHIA subordinate function.

History[]

Background[]

Patrick Brochard-Klein was one of the authors of the 2048 Raleigh Accords, which related to either human cloning or genetic engineering. He was also bilingual, able to speak English and French.[2]

Project Zero Dawn[]

Upon the discovery of the Faro Plague glitch, Brochard-Klein was recruited as part of Project Zero Dawn. He was selected by Elisabet Sobeck to serve as the Alpha of ELEUTHIA, overseeing the development of the subordinate function, which was responsible spawning a new generation of human beings with zygotes kept in cryo-storage within Cradle facilities around the world, as well as providing early childhood care and education up to kindergarten. He oversaw global collation and provisional storage of zygotes, perfection of exogenic technologies, design and perfection of servitors to provide nurture and inculcation during early child development as well as construction of the Cradles. He became aware that ELEUTHIA was seen as a genetic engineering project to some within his team, to which he clarified that the subordinate is to preserve the human genome, not alter it.[2] Additionally, before the protocol was scrapped, ELEUTHIA's technology was intended to carry out the Lightkeeper Protocol, spawning clones of the Alphas within GAIA Prime to continue the work of the original Alphas beyond their lifespan.[3]

Brochard-Klein received ectogenic chambers from Far Zenith to help with the development of ELEUTHIA and put in contact with Daniel McGill and Claire Nguyen of Far Zenith for consultation, being utterly astonished by them. He initially believed the Odyssey to be a fool's errand, but seeing how advanced the ectogenic chambers were, he gained more faith in their mission to Sirius.[4] Brochard-Klein had some despites with his Betas over zygote selection for ELEUTHIA-1 due to the limited time to run simulations of gene flow in future humans, but they agreed there was room for refinement in other Cradle populations. He also personally oversaw completion of ELEUTHIA-2, planning to formulate and propose a modified zygote selection plan for it.[5] Development of the multisevitors also provided many concerning challenges to him.[6]

Sobeck says goodbye

As the Faro Plague overran humanity's remaining strongholds before the subordinate functions were complete, Brochard-Klein and the rest of the Alphas were evacuated to the GAIA Prime facility, where they would spend the rest of their lives perfecting their respective subordinate functions. When it was discovered that one of GAIA Prime's access port seals malfunctioned, risking the facility's exposure to the Faro Plague, the Alphas were debating among themselves who would sacrifice themselves to fix it. As Elisabet appeared via hologram, having sacrificed herself for them and Zero Dawn, Brochard-Klein looked on in silence.[7]

Life within GAIA Prime[]

After Elisabet's sacrifice, while running integrity tests on the Cradles, GAIA asked Brochard-Klein about his fatigue and abnormal sleeping cycles, suggesting that he may be suffering from depression. She then confided in him that she was still processing the loss of Elisabet, asking for his advice as to whether she should quarantine these processes. Brochard-Klein admitted his lack of qualifications, but told her not to as it was natural.[8]

On February 2, 2066, Brochard-Klein and the other Alphas were gathered into a meeting by Ted Faro. They were shocked to learn that Ted had not only locked them out of all the systems, but had purged all copies of the APOLLO database, believing it to be a disease that he wanted to keep from the new humans Zero Dawn would create. As Brochard-Klein and Margo Shĕn got up to comfort Samina Ebadji as she was driven to tears, Ted vented the room's atmosphere, killing Brochard-Klein and the other Alphas.[9]

Legacy[]

ELEUTHIA was successful in spawning a new generation of human beings, with ELEUTHIA-9 and at least one other cradle west of the Pacific Ocean being successful, saving the human species from permanent extinction. Those within ELEUTHIA-9 successfully received nursery education,[10] although kindergarten suffered multiple system failures for unknown reasons.[11] However, due to the purge of the APOLLO archive, further education of the new humans couldn't take place. Additionally, the doors to the Lyceum never opened, with the multiservitors simply telling those within that the Lyceum wasn't yet available.[12] The reason why the door never opened is unknown.

The multiservitors continued looking after the children for years longer than was intended, treating them as if they were still young children despite their increasing age.[13] By the time the children were teenagers, the food supply within ELEUTHIA-9 was depleted, forcing the multiservitors to release the children into the wilds, telling them that they will be brave and that they will learn.[14] These teenagers went on to be the ancestors of the many tribes in the New World.[15]

Hundreds of years later, GAIA was able to use ELEUTHIA-9 to create a clone of Elisabet Sobeck using her genetic material in cryo-storage within the Cradle. This clone would be Aloy,[16] who went on to save the world from HADES,[17] rebuild GAIA and begin work to restore the biosphere from degradation that occurred during the Derangement,[18][19][20][21] and begin formulating plans to save the world from Nemesis.[22]

Personality[]

Brochard-Klein was a somewhat arrogant man, deeming ELEUTHIA to the "crown and jewel of GAIA's subordinate functions."[2] He also seems fairly quiet and kept to himself, not wishing to directly answer GAIA's questions of concern for him,[8] as well as keeping silent while Elisabet sacrificed herself.[7]

Brochard-Klein, despite his serious exterior, did have a sense of humor, seeing the funny side of the multiservitors intervening with each other and having a parental argument during a simulation.[6] Additionally, his astonishment towards Far Zenith's ectogenic chambers led him to become overcome with excitement and bombard them with questions, much to Daniel McGill's amusement.[23]
