Owls, known as Snowbirds by the Sky Tenakth, are a species of wildlife in Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds and Horizon Forbidden West.

Owls seen in the Horizon series appear to be great horned owls, a widespread species found across the Americas.

History

In the Old World

Owl zygotes were among the animals that were successfully collected before the Faro Plague eradicated the species and stored within ARTEMIS for later use in Project Zero Dawn.

In the New World

Despite not being among the animals listed by Charles Ronson as a pioneer organism, owls were released into the wilds, becoming common in the forests of the Cut and the Forbidden West. Whether they are indeed pioneer organisms and were released under GAIA's orders or were released by ARTEMIS during its independence is unknown.

Owls are especially hunted by the Sky Tenakth for food, with two notable meals made using them being the Encrusted Snowbird and the Stuffed Snowbird.

Habitat

Owls are commonly found flying along the edges of forests and rivers across the Cut, or infrequently found in wooded regions in the Forbidden West.

Behavior

Owls can usually be seen flying over woods or perched on tree branches. When perched, they make loud and easily identifiable hooting noises. They tend to congregate around the Banuk fishing camp at the western edge of the Cut.

Owls don't cause any harm to Aloy and tend to fly away upon noticing her or being fired at.

Loot

Owls are the only animals that can be looted for Owl Bones and Owl Skin in Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, and Owl Feathers, Owl Wishbones and Whole Snowbirds in Horizon Forbidden West. Like most other animals, owls can be looted for various types of meat and talismans.
