Dr. Narong Somptow was an accomplished medical doctor who provided Ted Faro with treatments designed to make him immortal, in exchange for a life for himself and his daughter Kanya inside Faro's personal bunker, Thebes.

Early life[]
Dr. Narong Somptow was an accomplished doctor based out of Bangkok, Thailand, with expertise in life-extension techniques.[1] He had a daughter, Kanya, around the early 2050s.
Life in Thebes[]
As the Faro Plague took place, Somptow and Kanya were selected by Ted Faro to join him in Thebes, Faro's personal bunker beneath San Francisco. Somptow was tasked with granting Faro immortality through gene therapy,[2] as well as secretly implanting "off switches" in Thebes' occupants, giving Faro the ability to kill them at will.[3]

Somptow was able to perform his work without incident for at least two years, providing Faro with treatments that dramatically improved his cells' ability to regenerate. Somptow estimated that Faro's life would extend far beyond his own, but his uncertainty in just how long it would last left Faro increasingly impatient. Additionally, the treatments resulted in escalating mutations in Faro's cells, which were only suppressed via a regimen of drugs that Somptow likened to "pharmaceutical whack-a-mole".[2] Somptow speculated that he would've had an easier time with Faro's treatments if he had access to his former lab in Bangkok, his old colleagues or his liquor cabinet.[1]
At some point, Grigori Fasbach, Faro's spiritual guru, hacked into Faro's files and discovered that he had killed the Alphas of Project Zero Dawn.[4] In retaliation for Fasbach accessing these restricted files, Faro activated his "off switch", causing him to suffer an apparent heart attack in his sleep. Although he continued to act as Faro's medical counsel, Narong was privately shaken by Faro's willingness to use the technology, which he had previously taken to be a bluff.[5] Kanya, however, began to suspect foul play in Fasbach's death. Another inhabitant of Thebes, Brianna, confided Fasbach's discoveries to Kanya;[4] the next day, she too had been killed in the same manner.[6]
Kanya eventually learned that Narong had enabled Ted's murders and confronted her father on the matter. Narong protested that he had no choice and was merely attempting to protect her, to which Kanya questioned what the point was: life in Thebes had become an "underground nightmare", one not worth living.[3] Narong ultimately conceded: the Somptows poisoned themselves, dying holding each others hands.[7]
Legacy[]
With Somptow gone, Faro no longer had any way to control his mutations. Following some of Somptow's sarcastic advice, Faro took up residence in Thebes' reactor room, where his mutations intensified to the point of becoming an immortal, sprawling, immobile mass of flesh.[7]
Despite the mutations accumulating and changing Faro into something far from a normal human, Somptow's work was technically successful- Faro remained alive for centuries, only dying when he was incinerated by a horrified Quen expedition.[8]
