Morlund is a character in Horizon Forbidden West.

History[]

Morlund's grandfather was one of the first Oseram to lead a delving expedition into the Forbidden West, roughly twenty years before the start of the Derangement, discovering an Ember which he used to put on spectacles back in the Claim, which Morlund was very fond of, but was unable to return to due lack of shards.[1]

Horizon Forbidden West[]

Morlund led another expedition back to the ruins of Las Vegas, accompanied by Abadund and Stemmur, and found a supply of Embers within Dunehollow. However, before they could harvest their delve, the ruin flooded, with the three barely escaping above ground. With his dream waiting just out of reach, Morlund was undeterred and searched for a way to reach the Embers. To that end, he attempted to build a "diving bubble", similar to an Old World diving bell. The Mark One failed on the first attempt in which Morlund got stuck inside and nearly drowned. The Mark Two didn't fare any better, as the air tube snagged, causing Morlund to nearly drown again.[1] To Abadund's annoyance, Morlund refused to give up, despite being threatened to be left to continue alone.[2]

Morlund and Abadund's argument was interrupted by the arrival of the Nora spear-maiden Aloy, who remarked they weren't typical delvers and took interest in Morlund's invention. Soon, the two began conversing on ways to improve it, much to Abadund's confusion. Abadund then pulled him away, reminding that she's a stranger, so Morlund exchanged names with her.[2]

Before Aloy left to scavenge the parts they needed, Morlund advised her to retrieve the Mark Two's air tube in the water as well as the locations of machine herds for her to hunt. When she returned, Morlund was ready to sensationalize her device as the "Incredible Diving Mask", but she insisted that simply Diving Mask would be enough. Once done, he questioned what she was looking for in Dunehollow. She answered that she was seeking the entity that caused the flood, which surprised him, as he assumed his crew caused it. He began recalling a "flash of red" when the flood started, which Aloy felt was helpful.[2]

A little while later, the water began to drain, prompting Morlund and his crew to make their descent back into Dunehollow. Spotting Aloy, he called out to her before realizing his shout attracted a Tideripper. Taking cover with Aloy, he remarked it would difficult to collect Ember with that machine present, so the group, minus Abadund, agree to take it down; Morlund had to grab Abadund by the arm to keep him from leaving. While Aloy tackled the Tideripper head-on, Morlund and his men assisted her from the high ground. Once the machine was destroyed, Morlund began to celebrate in their victory. Afterwards, the Oseram collected as many Embers as they could find and returned to the surface while Aloy sought out her prize.[2]

Back up top, they were greeted by holograms dancing in the night sky, far beyond anything Morlund had even dreamed of. As they were rejoined by Aloy, Morlund remarked that this was beyond his wildest dreams and thanked her for making it possible. As Aloy was about to take her leave, Morlund encouraged her to return to Hidden Ember, planning forgo his original plan to put on shows in the Claim and instead establish a settlement for all to see.[2]

When Aloy later returned to Hidden Ember, Morlund showed off his "Amazing Elevating Orb", which was inspired by the floating spheres the Banuk use. Unfortunately, he required a mechanical burner he found in Dunehollow, but a pack of Burrowers scared him away before he could claim it, a task that Aloy agreed to undertake.[3]

Once she returned with the burner, Morlund invited Aloy on the maiden flight. Unfortunately, as they were high in the air, they were hit by a maelstrom that snapped their tether, terrifying the two passengers until a Stormbird collided with the orb, causing them all to crash in the mountains. Morlund ended up separated from Aloy and was left pinned by debris on a cliff surrounded by machines. To his good fortune, he was rescued by Aloy once again. Once freed, he insisted on recovering the burner, as it was the most irreplaceable part of his invention. Finding their way back to the desert, they spot the Stormbird circling around the burner and destroy it. Recovering the burner, Morlund thanked Aloy once again for aiding him and returned to camp to work on his next Orb, though Aloy insisted he take Abadund and Stemmur on his next flight.[3]

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores[]

Morlund was later approached by Erend, who needed help spreading word about Nemesis in the Claim.[4]

Personality[]

Morlund is a talented and optimistic showman, filled with boundless energy and love for his craft, often naming his inventions with adjectives emphasising their greatness. He initially bonds with Aloy over their shared enthusiasm for the diving mask.
