- "I make meals, not trouble."
- ―Milduf Boarbroiler[2]
Milduf Boarbroiler is a minor character in Horizon Forbidden West, and the protagonist of The Official Horizon Cookbook: Tastes of the Seven Tribes.
History[]
Backstory[]
Milduf is known for having invented many Oseram dishes, his first being the Meat in the Middle,[3] and later on, Milduf's Local Stew,[4] Milduf's Treat, and the One-Handed Supper.[5]
Horizon Forbidden West[]
Milduf travelled to Chainscrape to work as a cook in the tavern, where he quickly became popular for his cooking. However, like many inhabitants of Chainscrape, Milduf was plighted by Ulvund and his cronies, with Ulvund's men harassing him for the "Ulvund discount" and demanded his signature dishes too frequently, to the point that Milduf's special griddle was worn out. Milduf generally complied due to his non-confrontational nature.[6]
After Aloy retrieved a temporary griddle for him and he made her a serving of Milduf's Local Stew as thanks,[4] Milduf was inspired by her and began to stand up for himself in his own way, putting too much seasoning[2] or using the wrong ingredients in the food of anyone who tried to give him a hard time.[7]
The Official Horizon Cookbook: Tastes of the Seven Tribes[]
As Milduf continued working at the tavern in Chainscrape, he was approached by Arvund and his cohort. While Milduf was worried they were about to complain about the food he had prepared for them, Arvund instead thanked Milduf for their meals and offered him a place in their expedition to the Forbidden West as the cook. Thinking back to when Aloy had taught him to stand up for himself and be brave, Milduf loudly proclaimed for everyone to hear that he would join them.[8] That night, Milduf through about his grand dream of opening his own eatery, with each item on the menu being collected during the expedition in the Forbidden West, starting a journal to document the adventure and recipes.[9]
After a brief stop in Barren Light,[9] the expedition left the Sundom into No Man's Land and made their way towards Plainsong. As they passed under the tentacles of a Metal Devil, Arvund shared rumors that the Savior of Meridian had defeated such a machine in far-off lands. When Milduf said that he had met the Savior and that she had helped him acquire a temporary griddle, Arvund laughed and told him not to focus on fantasies, to which Milduf planned to stew Arvund's boar for a minute too long. Seeing the dishes in Plainsong, believing they looked like serving bowls, led Milduf to believe that they were used by the Old Ones to feed enormous creatures.[10]
Once they reached the Utaru capital, Milduf met the local cook, Daen. There, Milduf learned about the land-gods that provided the Utaru with most of their crops, as well as several Utaru dishes. The Oseram then joined Daen and his people for a communal meal of Wheatslice, Spicy Beanweed Morsels, and Beanweed Bites served on a large platter, while Milduf enjoyed the experience, Arvund and the rest of the Oseram were unsatisfied by the vegetarian food and its reliance on beanweed, causing them all to suffer audibly well into the night.[11]
Heading further west, the Oseram expedition passed through the High Turning as their entered the harsh deserts of the northeastern Clan Lands. Milduf found ingredients hard to find in the desert, as plants were scarce and he was avoiding the local Tenakth under Arvund's orders. Woken early in the morning by the sounds of honking geese, Milduf snuck away from the group to collect their eggs. Having collected a bounty of eggs, he then encountered a squad of Desert Tenakth. Dropping to his knees, Milduf pleaded for his life. Concerned his pleas would attract machines, the squad's leader, Chatakka, labelled Milduf a thief and had the soldiers gag and take him at spear-point to Salt Bite. Held in a cage, Milduf overheard soldiers suggesting punishments for him.[12] As Chatakka stopped them, he ordered that Milduf was to fight for his freedom in their Melee Pit.[13]
As the sun set, Milduf feared that he wouldn't survive, but once night fell, he was approached by Pentalla, who removed his gag and gave him a bowl of Lizard Bites. Smitten so by her appearance that he couldn't summon a proper greeting, Milduf shoved a morsel from the bowl into his mouth. Caught off guard by the spice, Pentalla apologised that her apprentice may have over-spiced his food. As Milduf explained his purpose for being in the Clan Lands, Pentalla disappeared into the night.[13]
When Milduf was woken by Pentalla the next morning, she explained that she had spared him from the Melee Pit for now, but that it was now her responsibility to see Milduf's punishment through. The two then left Salt Bite together.[13] Pentalla explained to Milduf was she was taking him to the Memorial Grove for "a more fitting punishment." After an encounter with a Watcher, Milduf and Pentalla found the Runner's Wild was impassable due to an envoy of Bristlebacks, Behemoths and Leaplashers, forcing them to take a diversion through Stone Crest.[14]
Arriving at Stone Crest, the local Sky Tenakth cook refused to serve Milduf and Pentalla due to their tribal/clan origins. Pentalla revealed a white snowbird, claiming that Milduf hunted it. Sighing in defeat, the cook started preparing a Stuffed Snowbird for them, telling Milduf how rare this dish is and that he'd probably be the second foreigner to ever taste it. As they ate the meal, the cook shared some Sky Tenakth recipes with Milduf.[15]
Arriving at the Memorial Grove, Milduf was initially unimpressed as looked like any other overgrown ruin, but was fascinated by the Visions within. While he waited outside while Pentalla handled his trial, Milduf could hear roars of a crowd inside the Arena, until he was distracted by the smell of a nearby cook's Fireclaw Stew. The cook told Milduf to order now as he would soon by overrun by the crowd leaving the Arena, Mlduf questioned why the rush wasn't being avoided by crowd being fed in Arena, which the cook laughed that feeding hot stew in an unruly crowd was asking for trouble. Ignoring the cook's threats,[16] Milduf prepared some Meat in the Middle and headed for the Arena. Passing through the crowd, he sold servings of the food and returned to the cook empty-plattered. Impressed, the cook started making more Meat in the Middle and ordered his assistant to help Milduf.[17]
When the crowd left the Arena, they left with a lethargic dawdle instead of a violent stampede. Impressed, the cook complimented Milduf on the receipe and offered to share some Lowland Tenakth recipes in return. As night fell, Milduf remembered about his trial and rushed back to find Pentalla sharpening some arrows. Fearing these were for his punishment, Pentalla smiled as the Marshals, impressed by Milduf's food and the effect it had on the crowd, had named Pentalla a Ration Improvement Envoy; in exchange for his freedom, Milduf was to guide her through the eastern tribal lands to collect intel on meal preparation techniques. Overjoyed, Milduf fell to his knees as he thanked Pentalla.[17]
Milduf enjoyed the journey through the Shining Wastes back to Chainscrape as part of a Tenakth envoy, learning many uses for spikestalk from Pentalla. While he was sad to be leaving the Forbidden West, Milduf took Pentalla to the tavern to teach her some Oseram recipes and cooking techniques. These lessons were interrupted by Gilvarn, who started teasing him for not lasting long in the Forbidden West and having a woman as a captor.[18] Despite Milduf telling her not to, Pentalla stood up for him, starting a fight. As Milduf prepared to throw a baby potato, the fight was quickly stopped by Petra, who kicked Pentalla and Milduf out of the tavern. Happy to leave the tavern behind, the two made their way east to the cable car, with Pentalla eating her first Forge-Blackened Sirloin.[19]
Hitching a ride with a shipment heading east, Milduf and Pentalla made their way to the Royal Maizelands, where a Vanguard was waiting for them. While Pentalla took note on how the water trenches in the Maizelands could be recreated in the Lowlands, they took the elevators into Meridian and were greeted by Blameless Marad outside the Palace of the Sun, who took them to the royal kitchens. There, Milduf and Pentalla were told that they had been requested by Sun-King Avad to prepare a Tenakth meal for him. Milduf eagerly accepted, but Pentalla wanted to learn, not serve. Under Milduf's insistence that this was part of learning, she grabbed a bushel of redthorn pepper and two rats by the tails.[20] Horrified about the idea of serving rats to the Sun-King, Milduf poured kindleweed oil onto the coals ashen the rats. With Pentalla determined to still serve the rats to Avad, Milduf reminded her that he had her recipes and he would make them if she wouldn't, prompting her to storm out of the kitchen. Milduf made good on his threat, preparing a mix of all he had learned. Later on, when Avad came into the kitchen to thank Pentalla personally for the meal, Milduf explained her absence by claiming the mesa air had made her unwell. To show his appreciation, Avad offered his Vanguard to escort Milduf and Pentalla to the Nora Sacred Lands, as well as his personal healer to help Pentalla.[21]
As they made their way through the Gatelands, stopping at Lone Light on the way, Pentalla was less friendly to Milduf as she hunted turkey and Milduf gathered Wild Ember. Once they reached Daytower, Milduf got directions from a Nora huntress, who told him about Fens, the Master Cook, who lived an outcast life in the nearby Forsaken Village. Upon seeing an elder Nora warming his hands by a campfire, Milduf asked Fens to teach him his recipes, but Fens was reluctant to help outlanders as outlanders were responsible for the loss of Mother's Vigil.[22] Pentalla told Fens about her tribe historically greeting outsiders and other clan members with a blade, but that times are changing and they are stronger for what they share. Seeing the stars appearing above as a positive omen from All-Mother, he stood and took the two outlanders forage in the Valleymeet, with Fens easily taking down a chicken.[23] Taking Milduf and Pentalla to the Forsaken Village, Fens taught them how to make Fens' Fieldbird Stew, while also sharing other Nora recipes. Waking up the next morning, Fens was nowhere to be seen, having left behind a potion of Matriarch's Joy.[24]
Milduf and Pentalla made their way north, climbing icy cliffs into the Cut. Taking shelter in a cave during a blizzard, Pentalla confided her dislike of caves and frost to Milduf, telling him how they'll make a meal out of a mountain goat once the storm passes. Later on, as Pentalla went to kill a goat, they were interrupted by a Frostclaw. As it charged at Pentalla, Milduf took his griddle and slammed it against a cliff face, making a loud noise and cracking a layer of ice. Turning its attention to Milduf, the Frostclaw lunged at him, slamming into the cliff face as Milduf tumbled out of the way, narrowly escaping an avalanche that buried that Frostclaw. Pentalla was impressed, but the Frostclaw escaped with its plating now missing. The two now cornered, Pentalla slowed it down with a volley of arrows,[25] and it was finally taken down by a group of Banuk. The Banuk led Milduf and Pentalla to Song's Edge, where Milduf learned about Banuk recipes. Happy to meet some fellow Oseram at the outpost in Song's Edge, Milduf planned to join them on their way to Mainspring.[26]
On the day they were to depart, Milduf noticed that Pentalla's belongings weren't in the caravan. When he asked her why she wasn't packed, Pentalla, already knowing Oseram recipes, intended to instead return to the Clan Lands and that Milduf's punishment was complete. Milduf, unable to say what he needed to say, started telling her about the big forge in Mainspring and that maybe that was something she wanted to see. However, Pentalla left Milduf to return home. Milduf was saddened that he was unable to tell Pentalla how he really felt about her.[26]
Having returned to Mainspring, after a significant amount of time, Milduf accomplished his dream of opening his own eatery, which he named The Frostclaw's Head, after the trophy he kept from the Frostclaw that attacked him and Pentalla, and believing that he couldn't be happier.[27]
One day, a courier arrived at The Frostclaw's Head with a strange parchment, which had been handed over at a recent embassy and passed along to Milduf.[27] The parchment contained a letter from Kari of the Quen tribe on behalf of Pentalla, containing Quen recipes, and made Milduf consider visiting the Forbidden West again.[28]
