Mercenaries are humans from various tribes that are warriors for hire. They are used in a variety of tasks, such as bounty hunting or guarding locations. Due to the nature of their work, many of them are encountered as enemies to Aloy in various quests

History

During the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, a number of Oseram mercenaries were employed by Dervahl in his plot against Meridian. They assisted in subduing Ersa and her Vanguard and planted evidence to frame the Shadow Carja. Several of them would ambush Aloy and Erend as they investigated the site, ultimately falling to the two of them. A number of them were also guarding Dervahl's Camp until Aloy, Erend, and the Vanguard raided the camp, killing all the guards there. Dervahl was accompanied by several mercenaries as he infiltrated Meridian, though Aloy's intervention foiled his plans and killed his escort.

The Shadow Carja also made use of mercenaries, typically as bounty hunters, though they held them in contempt. One notable case was when several mercenary groups were hired to kill Uthid, a well-liked officer in the Shadow Carja military. Odund's Marvels, Kikuk's Killers, and Yun's Shunned all went after him, but with Aloy's assistance, she and Uthid completely wiped out Odund's Marvels and Kikuk's Killers while Vanasha handled Yun's Shunned.  

During the hunt for Redmaw, both Ahsis and Talanah were tracking it, though the former would hire a number of mercenaries to prevent the latter from getting in the way of stealing the glory of the kill from him. Aloy found Talanah and helped her fight off the mercenaries before resuming the hunt for Redmaw.

The Oseram Vilgund hired several mercenaries to investigate rumors of a remote Banuk Encampment where machines were docile. 

Another Oseram, Fernund, would hire six mercenaries to ambush Aloy as he sent her to Dusk Mesa to recover a relic, with the intent of stealing her spear. Aloy would either escape or kill all the mercenaries before making her way to Meridian to find Fernund.
