"An ancient ruin... turned into a Tenakth stronghold?"
―Aloy approaching the Grove

The Memorial Grove, often referred to simply as the Grove, is a settlement in Horizon Forbidden West. It is the capital of the Tenakth tribe, and serves as the foundation of their culture.

Description[]

The Memorial Grove is situated roughly at the intersection of the three clans' territories at the northeastern corner of the Raintrace. The Grove serves as the Chief's stronghold, and is home to them, the Marshals and the Chief's Guard. It also serves as a burial ground for the most esteemed Tenakth.[1]

Within the Grove are the Visions, holographic rendering of the Ten that serve as the basis for Tenakth mythology and material culture. As such, the Grove is considered sacred by all Tenakth, and is indisputably the most important site in the tribe.

The Tenakth have carved some of their tribal designs into the stonework of the ruins, adorning it in the blue and white colors of the Chief and Marshals.

Directly adjacent to the Grove is the Arena and a similarly named settlement, in which controlled battles against machines are held, such as that of the Kulrut.[2]

History[]

Old World[]

The Memorial Grove was originally known as the Mojave Battlefield Memorial Museum, a museum dedicated to the Battle of the Mojave. Featured heavily in the museum was JTF-10, and many of the holographic exhibits paid tribute to the squad's actions.

New World[]

The ruins of the Mojave Battlefield Memorial Museum was discovered by new humans of the New World. By that point, many of the holographic displays had begun to deteriorate, becoming glitched, incomplete renderings of their former selves. From these renderings, dubbed the "Visions", the tribe formed the basis of their culture, dedicating themselves to emulating "the Ten", naming their tribe the Tenakth, after a glitched sentence within the Visions.[3]

The early Tenakth wouldn't stay united, splitting into three clans, each of them drawing inspiration from a certain Vision for their homeland, way of life, and clan markings. However, the clans fought among themselves for control of the Grove. Thus began generations of bloody, perpetual war among the clans known as the Clan Wars, which continued for the next several generations. Over time, the Visions inevitably continued to falter, with the Chaplains passing their messages down through oral tradition as best they could.

On August 26, 3020[4], the Lowlander Hekarro did what no other Tenakth could and conquered the Grove. At the same time, the Extinction Signal arrived at GAIA Prime, prompting GAIA to self-destruct to stop HADES from wiping out life on Earth. As all the subordinate functions escaped self-destruction[5], AETHER took refuge in the processing core beneath the Grove, triggering the exhibit of Anne Faraday's call for peace and unity in light of war after the Hot Zone Crisis. Hekarro alone witnessed this, believing this to be a message from the Ten, and was profoundly changed by the Vision he saw. From that day forward, Hekarro dedicated his life to fighting for peace and uniting the three Tenakth clans.[6] He started holding the Kulrut in the nearby Arena for Tenakth to become his Marshals.

Years later, the Grove was visited by Aloy, who had come in search of AETHER, and was granted an audience with Hekarro. They ultimately came to a bargain where Aloy would assist Kotallo in getting the Sky Clan to send contenders to the Kulrut and later defend it from Regalla's rebels, and in exchange, Hekarro would grant her access to AETHER.[7]

The Kulrut

During the next Kulrut, Regalla's rebels would break through the defenses, with the Grove becoming a battleground between Hekarro's loyalists and Regalla's rebels, during which much of the structure collapsed during the fighting. Just when Regalla disarmed Hekarro, Aloy, who was holding up a fighter jet with her rope, signalled Kotallo to tackle the Chief out of the way before she released it, prompting Regalla to escape being crushed. As Hekarro's forces regrouped, Regalla was forced to retreat, vowing to return with the full force of her army. Having achieved victory, Hekarro formally ordained the surviving Kulrut contestants as Marshals, and allowed Aloy into the chamber where AETHER was located. After retrieving AETHER, the action inadvertently triggered the same Vision of Faraday Hekarro saw when he conquered the Grove, inspiring his loyalists to salute him and affirm their commitment to his cause. This also had the effect of repairing the Grove's faltering Visions.[2]

Later on, Regalla would later make good on her word and launched a second assault on the Grove. After her machines were disabled by Aloy on the back of a Sunwing, Regalla was formally challenged by Aloy, which she had no choice but to accept. Aloy bested Regalla, ruining her credibility among the rebels and ending the rebellion for good.[8]

Trivia[]

  • The Memorial Grove is very similar to Meridian in being the stronghold of a tribe located on the edge of a jungle (the Raintrace in the Grove's case, The Jewel in Meridian's case).
