MINERVA was the subordinate function of GAIA tasked with broadcasting the deactivation codes that would shut down the Faro Swarm as part of Project Zero Dawn. MINERVA also required the construction of massive communications arrays capable of transmitting the deactivation signal across the world.

History

Purpose

MINERVA was the subordinate function designed to decipher the deactivation codes for the Faro Swarm. Once these codes were constructed, the signal would be broadcast through massive communication arrays, which would be constructed by robots fabricated by HEPHAESTUS[1]. MINERVA's success was crucial to the Zero Dawn project, as none of the terraforming processes could begin without the elimination of the Faro Plague.

New World

MINERVA was successful in its intended purpose, although it had some unexpected results as well. The Spire, one of its communication towers, was crucial in the formation of the Carja tribe and the founding of their capital, Meridian.

HADES intended to use the Spire to broadcast a reactivation signal and cause a second Faro Plague. While it was initially successful, the transmission was halted by Aloy in time, preventing MINERVA from being used for the opposite of its intended purpose.

Unknown Signal

One day, an unknown transmission struck GAIA and turned her subfunctions, including MINERVA, into independent AIs set only to their predetermined purpose. This caused the subfunction HADES to initiate his purpose of destroying the biosphere. To prevent this, GAIA activated her kill-switch in an attempt to destroy her subfunctions along with herself. However, in response to this, HADES released a virus that unshackled itself along with all the other subfunctions from her. MINERVA then dissapeared for parts unknown.

Trivia

  • MINERVA is named after the Roman goddess of wisdom and battle strategy.
    • This makes it the only AI to use the Roman name of a Greek god, Athena being the Greek name.
    • According to Ben McCaw, the lead writer for Horizon Zero Dawn, this decision was made because Guerrilla Games liked the sound of "Minerva" better than "Athena".[2]
