LATOPOLIS, known as the HADES Proving Lab in the New World, is a ruin in Horizon Forbidden West.

The facility was previously a Faro Automated Solutions cyberwarfare facility which was later repurposed by Project Zero Dawn to test HADES's functionality.[1][2][3][4]

History[]

In the Old World[]

LATOPOLIS was originally used by Faro Automated Solutions to test out cyberwarfare programs, including "draxxdotnet-4", Project Gossamer Thrall, the Rames project, know-it-all MEMEr and Sovereign 7482.[3] Due to the delicate nature of the projects involved, LATOPOLIS was equipped with Black Quartz protocols, sixth-generation Naruki signal blockers, and 14 miles of military-grade synth-copper insulation, all for the purpose of keeping the facility digitally isolated. LATOPOLIS's security was so impressive that even Travis Tate described it as the closest one could get to 100% secure.[2]

During the development of Project Zero Dawn, LATOPOLIS was repurposed by the HADES development team into a testing grounds for their subordinate function. Part of the tests involved using a custom modified RECLUSE SPIDER, a device designed to securely contain two separate software modules, using multiple backups of HADES and GAIA to test HADES's takeover of GAIA in the event of a biosphere reset being needed, ensuring both systems operated as expected and that GAIA wasn't damaged by HADES. Ted Faro wanted to relocate HADES development to the Zero Dawn Project Facility due to the costs of modifying RECLUSE SPIDER, but Travis refused due to the risk of HADES escaping containment.[1]

Travis discovered that Hank Shaw, one of the HADES Betas, had forged a deal with Far Zenith to covertly steal a copy of GAIA for the Odyssey.[5][6] On June 16, 2065,[7] Travis tortured Hank with extremely loud music, getting a confession and the transmit code.[8] In retaliation, Travis and Elisabet worked together to compile a logic bomb disguised as a copy of GAIA and her subordinate functions, which Travis successfully sent to Far Zenith.[9]

Due to its nigh-impenetrable security, backups of GAIA in LATOPOLIS were unaffected by Ted Faro's purge of APOLLO in February 2066.[10]

In the New World[]

LATOPOLIS suffered major damage over the centuries, including substantial flooding, which corroded all of the HADES backups, and all but two of GAIA's test kernels.

Roughly a thousand years after being abandoned, after learning about LATOPOLIS from HADES, Sylens brought the now-degraded HADES to the entrance of the facility, leaving it there for Aloy to find and purge HADES for good.[11]

After finding and purging HADES, Sylens told Aloy about the GAIA backups inside LATOPOLIS, which may still be intact. As Aloy made her way through the ruined facility, she found RECLUSE SPIDER, containing two intact GAIA backups, but to her and Sylens's surprise, these were merely root kernels and didn't contain any of the subordinate functions. Choosing to go find the original sub-functions, using LATOPOLIS' satellite uplink, she was only able to locate MINERVA.[12]

However, when the intruder alarm suddenly went off, Sylens admitted to having sent an anonymous data pulse that was picked up by Far Zenith, though he didn't mention who the intruders were. He claimed that they wanted GAIA restored as well and that they would need Aloy due to her being a clone of Elisabet. Aloy was enraged by yet another deception and vowed to kill him once she succeeded in her mission to save the Earth before destroying her Focus with Sylens's spyware on it and equipping a new one, spyware free. Aloy took cover as the Zeniths used their own clone, Beta, to open the facility's gene locked door. As Beta retrieved the other GAIA kernel, she began to suspect that someone had already been in the facility. Subsequently, in raising the RECLUSE SPIDER's arms, Aloy was left exposed to the Zeniths, leading them to remove Beta from the scene. Tilda correctly guessed she was created by the original GAIA to fix the terraforming system but Gerard decided she wasn't needed and ordered Erik to kill Aloy.[12]

Realizing Erik possessed a personal shield impervious to her weapons, Aloy resorted to bringing down the RECLUSE SPIDER, collapsing the platform and allowing her to dive into the water below and find another way out. Although Erik assumed she died in the collapse, he dispatched Specters to search for her. Aloy managed to find a weak spot in the wall of the generator room. In opening it, more of the facility collapsed, flushing her out of LATOPOLIS.[12]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Latopolis" is taken from the ancient Egyptian city of the same name (now known as Esna), keeping in line with FAS's trend of Egyptian-inspired nomenclature.
  • While LATOPOLIS can be re-entered after Death's Door, the door to the RECLUSE SPIDER chamber won't open due to damage.
