"A tree cannot pick up its roots. So I stopped what was threatening us."
―Kel

Kel is a character in Horizon Forbidden West.

History[]

Kel was raised in Summerwind,[1] a settlement south of Plainsong that has since been abandoned.

Kel became a member of the Chorus, taking Lyna as an apprentice.[1] Like many among the Chorus, Kel was a staunch traditionalist, accepting the Utaru as doomed and their death as part of the natural cycle of life.[2]

As the Red Blight infested Plainsong, Kalae argued for the Utaru to leave Plainsong for their own survival. While Kalae's views were shunned by the Chorus, especially Kel, her views gained strength among the Utaru, which granted her the rite to join the Chorus.[3] Believing that the Utaru were bound to their land, Kel resorted to desperate measures to prevent Kalae's radical views from taking root. When Kalae left to the Promontory to perform the Rite of Discovery, Kel had Lyna follow after and kill her, with neither being seen again. A search party found Kalae's broken weapon at the base of the Promontory, concluding she had fallen into the river below.[4]

However, Kel's treachery would not go undiscovered for long. At the request of Kalae's husband Bree, Aloy went to the Promontory to find Kalae's seed pouch, eventually discovering the bodies of both Kalae and Lyna (Kalae was strangled by Lyna, while Lyna was killed by a Stalker while trying to hide Kalae's body). Knowing her plot would be exposed, Kel returned to Summerwind to commit suicide by poisoning herself rather than stand trial for her crime. Aloy arrived in time for Kel to give a confession, after which she succumbed to the poison.

Post-Mortem[]

Due to their crimes, Kel and Lyna's seeds could not be planted in Plainsong. Fane alone handled the fates of their seed pouches, as neither woman's families could bring themselves to be present. Kel's treachery was met with shock and shunning among the tribe, with even Fane admitting that her fate was deserved.[5]
