The Horizon Online Project is a co-op/multiplayer live service game in development at Guerrilla Games. It was confirmed by Guerrilla in a December 2022 post on their Twitter account and indirectly reconfirmed along with their announcement of Horizon Steel Frontiers on November 12, 2025.[1][2] The Online Project should not be confused with Horizon Steel Frontiers, the announced Horizon MMORPG in development at NCSoft. Horizon Steel Frontiers was previously referred to as "Project Skyline" and, erroneously, as "Project H".
Confirmed Information[]
Guerrilla's Twitter post confirming the Online Project describes that it will have "a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look" and that "friends will be able to explore the majestic wilds of Horizon together." The post also confirmed that the Online Project is a standalone game, as opposed to simply being a mode or feature of a future Horizon single-player game. Since 2021, various job posts on Guerrilla's website have offered glimpses into aspects of the game's development and design, including a focus on co-op combat against new machines[3][4], strong narrative elements similar to the main Horizon games[5][6], and an intent for the game to offer extensive gameplay hours with simultaneous launch on PlayStation and PC.[7]
Unconfirmed Insights[]
Work on the Online Project first began in 2018 after Horizon Zero Dawn's successful launch. This timeline is confirmed by Simon LaRouche's LinkedIn profile.[8] Simon is the Online Game Director on the Online Project. He was previously a game director/designer on a number of other titles at Guerrilla and Ubisoft including Killzone 2, Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Patriots, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Siege, and Watch Dogs 2, among others.
Another director on the project is Arjan Bak.[9] Arjan worked on multiple Killzone and Horizon games in various roles. Most recently, he was the Art Director for the Frozen Wilds DLC for Horizon Zero Dawn. His credits on Forbidden West only show him in a relatively minor “Additional Design” role[10] and he is not credited at all in the Burning Shores DLC. This, combined with the timeline of roles shown on his LinkedIn profile, strongly suggests that his primary focus has been the Online Project since approximately 2018 after his work on the Frozen Wilds DLC was completed with its launch in November 2017.
Chris Lee is another notable figure who worked on the Online Project. He was let go during the 2024 PlayStation layoffs, but prior to that he served as a game designer on the project from 2018-2024 and his LinkedIn profile offers insights on the game.[11] The Online Project was in a concepting/protoyping/pre-production stage from 2018 to approximately late 2021. His experience section suggests that, after Forbidden West's launch in February 2022, work on the Online Project ramped up with other Guerrilla employees shifting their focus to it. How many people or what portion of the studio shifted at this point is unclear, but full production likely didn't begin until after April 2023, which is when the Burning Shores DLC for Forbidden West shipped. Chris's LinkedIn page also mentions a "multiplayer game mode", which suggests the game could have other modes, potentially including a single-player mode.
Further evidence for a single-player mode was found in a Senior Quest Designer job opening posted on Guerrilla's website in February, 2025.[6] The opening, which was specifically posted under the Online Project category, mentioned that one of the applicant's primary responsibilities would be to "Design and build interesting combat scenarios and activities for both single-player and multiplayer experiences." This job post also provided additional evidence that the Online Project will have strong narrative elements, similar to the existing single-player Horizon games.
In late 2024, a job post on Guerrilla's website for a Release QA Intern indicated the applicant would need to be available for the internship during the first half of 2025. The job description also stated the applicant would "... acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure the game is prepared for launch."[12] Given that the internship was restricted to university students enrolled in The Netherlands, it likely ended in May-August of 2025. This suggests the game could be revealed by the end of 2025.
Confusion About Various Horizon Projects[]
The lack of confirmed information, conflicting leaks, and poor reporting by media outlets has lead to confusion about the Horizon games currently in development. For clarification, this section provides a brief overview of the Horizon games that are currently confirmed or rumored.
Horizon Online Project[]
The Horizon Online Project is a co-op/multiplayer live service game in development at Guerrilla Games. It was confirmed by Guerrilla in a December 2022 post on their Twitter account.[1] The Online Project seems to be completely separate from Project Skyline and Project H. The tweet also makes it clear that the Online Project is completely separate from Horizon 3. It is not a mode included within Horizon 3, as some fans speculate.
Horizon Steel Frontiers (Project Skyline)[]
Horizon Steel Frontiers, previously know by the codename Project Skyline, is a Horizon MMORPG in development at NCSoft. It is completely separate from Horizon Online Project and Horizon 3 as confirmed in Guerrilla's announcement of Horizon Steel Frontiers.[2]
Project H[]
Project H was thought to be synonymous with Project Skyline until the author of the MTN articles reporting on it indicated that Project H is likely a completely separate game at NCSoft and is not related to the Horizon franchise at all.
Horizon MMO[]
"The Horizon MMO" is a title media outlets have used interchangeably when discussing Horizon Steel Frontiers, Project Skyline, Project H, and the Horizon Online Project. It is not an officially leaked codename for any game and its use has only added confusion.
Horizon 3[]
Horizon 3 is the assumed third installment of single-player games in the Horizon franchise. It has not been publicly revealed or confirmed by Guerrilla, but their 2022 Twitter post confirming the Online Project also clearly indicates their intent to continue developing single-player experiences with Aloy as the main character.[1] Additionally, many job posts on their website since 2022 have strongly suggested they are currently developing Horizon 3 alongside the Online Project with separate teams for each.
