"Our only concern is the welfare of the tribe."
Teersa

The High Matriarchs are the leaders of the Nora tribe.

History[]

At the time of Aloy's birth, the rank of High Matriarch was held by Teersa and Lansra, with no known others.[1]

As of the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, Teersa, Lansra and Jezza are the only High Matriarchs currently in power.[2]

Attainment[]

The rank of High Matriarch is held by women who are great-grandmothers, with three or more generations of living progeny beneath them.[2] If an entire generation passes away, the High Matriarch will be demoted back to Matriarch.[3]

Role[]

The High Matriarchs act as the leaders of the Nora tribe, overseeing major rituals, such as Naming Rituals[1] and the blessing before the Proving.[4]

Only High Matriarchs are allowed to enact the Death-Seeker ritual,[5] as well as know the meaning of the Death-Seeker face paint.[6] Like lesser Matriarchs, other responsibilities include teaching, offering counsel, giving blessings[2] (such as the Seeker blessing[7]), and judging those who commit crimes.[2] Only Matriarchs and High Matriarchs were allowed inside of All-Mother Mountain until Teersa revoked that rule during the Eclipse's second invasion of the Sacred Lands.[8]

Although the High Matriarchs typically make decisions together with a majority vote attitude,[2] occasionally one may act without the agreement of the others, as Teersa did when she oversaw Aloy's Naming Ritual without the other Matriarch's approval, which can lead to arguments among them.[1] Also, the more descendants a High Matriarch has, the more authority she will hold.[5]

Known High Matriarchs[]

As revealed in the subtitle files of The Womb of the Mountain in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Aloy was supposed to be able to find a reliquary of High Matriarch headdresses going back centuries, arranged on the walls of All-Mother Mountain in the order of the women who wore them.[9] However, no such headdresses can be found in the final game.
