- "A gemstone. It's green like Blaze, but hard and shiny."
- ―Aloy spotting Greenshine
Greenshine is a precious material in Horizon Forbidden West. It can be found on land or underwater.
Occurrence[]
Greenshine can only be found within the Daunt and the Forbidden West, notably being absent in the Burning Shores and the areas explored in Horizon Zero Dawn.
The Carja hold the belief that Greenshine a gift of the sun, coming into existence as a result of green twilight flares. However, research done by a Carja scholar has found that due to Greenshine being found in places where sunlight cannot reach, such as underground, has made them confident that this religious view is incorrect.[1]
The same scholar, noticing that Greenshine cannot be found within rock, only on the surface, was enough evidence for them to discard any theories involving intense pressure or temperature.[1]
The Oseram believe that Greenshine is a hardened state of Blaze, a theory that the Carja scholar believes to be correct, noting that they have similar visual properties. They have also noticed a correlation between Greenshine deposits and machine presence, making the theory that Greenshine is a result of Blaze leaking from machines all the more likely.[1] If true, it's unknown why Greenshine is limited to being found within the Daunt and the Forbidden West.
When scanned with a Focus, it reveals that Greenshine contains traces of biofuel, indicating that Greenshine is made of more substances than just biofuel.
Uses[]
As a highly valuable resource, Greenshine is primarily used to upgrade or purchase rarer, more valuable items.
Greenshine can be found in varying sizes, ranging from slivers to slabs. Its size depends on where it is found:
| Size | Rarity | Description | Common Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sliver | Rare | A tiny piece of a rare, highly valuable green crystal | Eastern regions |
| Fragment | Rare | A small piece of a rare, highly valuable green crystal | Desert regions |
| Chunk | Rare | A medium-sized piece of a rare, highly valuable green crystal | Coastal regions |
| Cluster | Very Rare | A large piece of a rare, highly valuable green crystal | Underwater |
| Slab | Legendary | A very large piece of a rare, highly valuable green crystal | Areas only accessible by flying machine |

Availability[]
Greenshine deposits can be found scattered throughout the base map of Horizon Forbidden West. They can be easily found using the Focus, emit a bright green light (making them easy to spot at night), and emit a noise making them easy to find.
Sunken Caverns have several Greenshine deposits within them, with all of them needing to be collected in order to complete the Sunken Cavern.
Metal Flowers often hide Greenshine deposits, requiring the Vine Cutter in order to access them.
Amount[]
To current knowledge, Greenshine can be found in the following amounts: 39 Slabs, 39 Clusters, 64 Fragments, 67 Chunks, and 66 Slivers. Whether these numbers are correct or if more deposits remain undiscovered is currently unknown.
In order to upgrade all outfits to their max level, Aloy will need 14 Slabs, 9 Clusters, 10 Fragments, 18 Chunks and 11 Fragments. For weapons, she will need 20 Slabs, 16 Clusters, 38 Fragments, 24 Chunks and 28 Slivers. Furthermore, she can use 1 Slab, 6 Clusters, 12 Fragments, 18 Chunks and 14 Slivers in trades. That leaves 3 Slabs, 8 Clusters, 4 Fragments, 7 Chunks and 13 Slivers that are either excess material or have a use not yet listed on this page.
