Gerrit is a character in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores.[1] He is a highly decorated Admiral in the Quen Navy and is the leader of the tribe in the Burning Shores.
History[]
After a long and successful career in the Quen Navy, Gerrit joined the Eastern Expedition with the intent of it being his final mission. To his great dismay, the fleet was split in two by a typhoon, with Gerrit's half landing in the treacherous Burning Shores.
After a year of being stranded, several Quen scouting parties went missing without explanation and a mysterious tower was erected a couple weeks after that began shooting down anything that got too close. Furthermore, Compliance Officer Rheng accused Petty Officer Seyka of violating tribal law by taking and using the late Diviner Vai's Focus. Rheng would later bring Seyka before Gerrit to present as proof of her crimes, in addition to fraternizing with a "barbarian", Aloy. However, Seyka interrupted Rheng, declaring she could find their missing people by following the data from Vai's Focus, pointing to Starlight Rise, and she believed Aloy could help her. Though Gerrit acknowledged that Seyka broke Quen law, he ruled that find their missing people was the higher priority and permitted Seyka and Aloy to act as they see fit, resulting in a defeated Rheng storming off.
Rheng would later summon Gerrit as he formally accused Theoa of conspiring with Diviner Enki, claiming to have a witness who spotted them talking before he left the camp, a claim Theoa denied. However, Aloy intervened, announcing that she found Enki's expedition, claiming they all died because of Rheng's interference. To back up to her accusation, Rokomo stepped forward and identified himself as a Risk Specialist, assigned by Rheng to investigate Enki, who died protecting him from a machine. This displeased Gerrit, outraged that Rheng abused his authority to the point where he defied the crisis clause of the Maritime Charter that would've transferred Rokomo to his command and had him imprisoned. He promised to speak at Rokomo's impending court martial back in the Great Delta.
Seyka would regularly report back to Gerrit on her missions, revealing that a Living Ancestor, Walter Londra, was responsible for their missing people's disappearance, a revelation the Admiral struggled to comprehend. Though the majority of the devoted returned to camp, several were abducted. Gerrit refused to mount a rescue despite Otosu's pleas, leading him to seek Aloy for help.
Gerrit was later witness to a Horus awakening, he believed that the Time of Ashes had come again. Seyka would late report that she and Aloy defeated it together. When the flame-haired huntress rejoined them, Gerrit formally declared his people to be in her debt. In response, she requested that Gerrit give Seyka the credit she deserved for the risks she took.
