"Looks like a Lancehorn... but with scarier antlers."
―Aloy, sighting a Fanghorn

The Fanghorn is an Acquisition Class machine in Horizon Forbidden West.

History[]

The main purpose of the Fanghorn is to convert natural resources into biofuel. Two models of Fanghorn were released: the Fire Fanghorn and the Plasma Fanghorn.

While it's unknown when they were first released, Fire Fanghorns can be found in the Daunt and the Clan Lands. The bodies of Plasma Fanghorns can be found at the Sheerside Mountains, but no active ones can be found.

At the advent of the Derangement, almost all machines started becoming increasingly aggressive towards humans, including the Fanghorns.

Horizon Forbidden West[]

Delah and Boomer had Aloy collect a Fanghorn Rib and some Charger Horns for them to build a Prototype Spike Thrower.[1]

Wanting to use Fire Fanghorn Salvage to build a set of armor, Larend hired Aloy with a contract to hunt a Fanghorn and retrieve its salvage for him, which Aloy successfully did.[2]

Fanghorns, Apex Burrowers and Ravagers were kept in a pen by the residents of Arrowhand for later looting, which Aloy and Drakka came to do.[3]

When Aloy infiltrated Cauldron MU and overrode its core, she gained access to the information needed to override Fanghorns, albeit corrupted.[4] She later restored the override using the equipment in the Base.

When Stemmur saw the reindeer in the Christmas holograms above Hidden Ember, he compared them to Fanghorns.

Appearance[]

The Fanghorn is cervine in appearance, with its wide, jagged horns making it reminiscent of an elk. The machine's chassis is nearly identical to the other grazing machines (namely the Grazer and Lancehorn), with four narrow limbs, monocular eye arrangement, a rather long neck, and a collection of canisters at the posterior end: the addition of armor plating with the "evolved" variant only increases this machine's resemblance to its counterparts.

Excluding the distinctive horns, the Fanghorn's design has two major differences from its counterparts. Fanghorns have two optical sensors (an oblong rectangular primary eye and a smaller, circular eye) arranged vertically rather than the single circular eye of the others. Additionally, it has three elemental canisters (two Blaze, one Purgewater), with a single large resource canister resting beneath them.

Behavior[]

Like most small Acquisition machines, Fanghorns are generally found in herds and are skittish around humans, fleeing as often as they fight.

Fanghorns are the dominant grazing machines in the Forbidden West, where their counterparts are comparatively rare, although they have been seen as far east as the Daunt.

Abilities[]

The Fanghorn is the strongest of the three "grazing" machines, having the largest health pool, most powerful attacks and the unique ability among them to employ ranged elemental attacks. It also possesses resistance against Fire, making it a less viable strategy to ignite its elemental canisters in combat.
