Fane is a character in Horizon Forbidden West. He is a member of the Utaru tribe's leadership body, the Chorus.

History[]

Fane and the rest of the Chorus were met by Varl, Zo and Aloy, who tried to convince the Chorus to let them enter the Sacred Cave in an effort to heal Plainsong's fields and recover MINERVA. He, along with a fellow member, Kel, rebuked the trio's offer and insist if it is time for the Utaru to return to the earth, than they will. However, before the Chorus could reach a decision, the Cordon was breached by Apex machines. The need for the Chorus's permission now moot, Aloy's party left for the mountain.

Conspiracy in the Chorus[]

Fane encountered Aloy again when she barged into a dispute with him, Kel, and a man named Bree. Bree's wife, Kalae, a radically progressive aspiring member of the Chorus, was missing and presumed dead after she left for a traditional (albeit abandoned) initiation ritual. Insisting it was too dangerous to risk more lives for one woman's stubbornness, the two rejected Bree's plea to locate her body so he could recover her seed pouch. Aloy agreed to search for Kalae on Bree's behalf, to which Fane was dismissive.

Aloy soon returned to Plainsong with Kalae's seed pouch, along with news that Kalae had been murdered. To his horror, Fane recognized the seed pouch of the killer (who had fallen to a Stalker), identifying her as Kel's apprentice Lyna. Realizing his colleague orchestrated the crime, he directed Aloy to Kel's location, Summerwind, while he and Bree gathered guards to confront his former ally.

Fane arrived at Summerwind just after Kel had committed suicide. As he lamented the deaths of three of his people, Fane swallowed his pride and formally thanked Aloy for exposing the conspiracy. In the aftermath, Fane would be the one to handle the fate of the two conspirators' seed pouches, as their families could not bring themselves to come.[note 1] Kel's treachery proved a deep personal and political blow, as Fane's close alignment with Kel cost him much of his sway.

A New Season[]

Fane's preaching of the cycle of life and death ultimately fell aside when Zo, with the help of Aloy, healed Plainsong's Land-Gods and restored the land to its former glory.

To Zo's surprise, Fane appeared to be receptive to her bid to gather the Utaru together, although he has yet to learn of Nemesis.

Personality[]

One of the more vocal members of the Chorus, Fane is a firm traditionalist and carries himself as primus inter pares among his colleagues. As such, he is one to passively accept the tribe's hardship as part of the cycle of life and death, rather than take action to protect his people. He typically treats those who disagree with smugness and condescension, and is quick to dismiss input from outlanders as ignorant of his people's ways.

Despite his negative traits, Fane ultimately acts in what he believes is his tribe's best interests, and will not resort to underhanded tactics to accomplish his goals. As such, he is devastated upon learning of Kel's treachery and begrudgingly admits that his ally's fate was deserved. He is also capable of swallowing his pride and recognizing the error of his ways.

Notes[]

  1. If Aloy picks the fist option at the end of The Promontory, Fane will burn the seeds of Kel and Lyna at the request of Bree. For the other two options, Fane will send the pouches down the river as per Utaru tradition.
