Chamber B1-001, an ectogenic chamber within ELEUTHIA-9.
Ectogenic Chambers are devices used to gestate human zygotes into full term newborns.
Function[]
Ectogenic chambers function as artificial wombs, able to gestate a human zygote to full term. Interestingly, Aloy was gestated in 221 days,[1] 59 days short of a typical human pregnancy of 280 days. Whether this has anything to do with the ectogenic chamber itself is unknown.
It appears that ectogenic chambers also have some form of cryonic capability, allowing them to store living humans by freezing them, as Beta was able to hide inside one while unconscious, with Varl describing her skin as feeling like ice and the presence of steam being released and falling (typical when very cold air meets warm air) when Beta was released from it.[2]
History[]
In the Old World[]
Prior to the death of Peter Tshivhumbe, Far Zenith embryologists made massive leaps in ectogenesis in the Ninmah Research Lab, producing ectogenic chambers that can safely gestate human zygotes with little risk. However, owing to their secrecy, they didn't share these advancements with those outside Far Zenith, who were struggling to achieve the same results.[3] After Tshivhumbe's death, Far Zenith's aims shifted, leading to the ectogenic chambers being put into storage within the lab they were created in.[4]
As the Faro Plague became known, representatives from Project Zero Dawn got in contact with Far Zenith, negotiating a trade between them: Far Zenith would provide them with a copy of the HOMER archive, 500 ectogenic chambers and supplementary ectogenesis research reports, and in exchange, Zero Dawn would give them an alpha build of APOLLO in the week prior to the Odyssey's launch, a trade Elisabet Sobeck was relucent to agree to.[5] Daniel McGill of Far Zenith was especially elated with the trade, seeing the ectogenic chambers as old tech collecting dust.[6]
Once the chambers arrived at the Zero Dawn Project Facility, Patrick Brochard-Klein (likely one of the most credible embryologists in the world) was astounded by them, believing them to be 50 years ahead of what he was aware of, with the risks of ECMO, problems with nutrition delivery and hormonal stability, and twelve other risk areas having all been resolved by Far Zenith embryologists. Copies of them were later mass fabricated[3] and implemented within the ELEUTHIA cradles. Ectogenic chambers were planned to be used as part of the Lightkeeper Protocol, which would gestate clones of the Alphas to continue the work of their originals beyond their lifetime, but protocol this was later scrapped.[7][8] Meanwhile, the Odyssey was also equipped with ectogenic chambers, a more advanced model than those kept within the Ninmah Research Lab.[9]
In the New World[]
Around the year 2310, the ectogenic chambers within the cradles were used by ELEUTHIA to gestate a new generation of humans.
Centuries later, on August 20, 3020, GAIA sent an order to ELEUTHIA to gestate a clone of Elisabet Sobeck,[10] who was created within Chamber B1-001.[1][11] At some point, one of the ectogenic chambers aboard the Odyssey was used to create Beta.[9]
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
A Far Zenith Model K ectogenic chamber within the Zero Dawn Project Facility.
While exploring the Zero Dawn Project Facility, Aloy discovered some ectogenic chambers,[12] specifically Far Zenith Model K ectogenic chambers,[13] within the workspace for the ELEUTHIA team. After hearing about cradle facilities, she began to believe that she came from such a place within All-Mother Mountain. Despite maintaining hope that she was born to a mother, Sylens coldly told her that that simply wasn't possible.[12]
After entering ELEUTHIA-9, Aloy found Chamber B1-001, the ectogenic chamber that she was birthed from, along with dozens more.[14]
Horizon Forbidden West[]
An ectogenic chamber within the Ninmah Research Lab.
While searching the Ninmah Research Lab for "the asset" that Verbena Sutter was searching for, Aloy and Varl found Beta hiding in one of the the 237 ectogenic chambers still in storage there.[2]

Trivia[]
- There is no mention of ectogenic chambers for use by ARTEMIS, which would also require such technology in order to gestate animals.
