One of the boats used in the Eastern Expedition's fleet.
The Eastern Expedition is a group of Quen that were launched aboard a flotilla of many ships from the Great Delta across the Great Ocean, destined for San Francisco in order to recover data that may help their tribe.
History[]
Formation[]
As a result of the biosphere’s degradation, the Quen homeland became subject to catastrophic weather, bringing about crop failure, flooding, and drought. At the urging of a relative[note 1], the Emperor of the Quen ordered the launch of an expedition to San Francisco, in hopes that data would be found that could help the tribe solve their problems. San Francisco was chosen as many of the most important Ancestors, including Ted Faro, spent a lot of time there.[1]
The Eastern Expedition, which took many years to prepare for, the flotilla consisting of dozens of ships[1] took seven years alone to build, as all of the tribe's resources were poured into preparing the fleet. The expedition was to be headed by the Emperor’s relative, who was given the title of “Ceo”, with Bohai being selected by his colleagues on the Board of Overseers to supervise data retrieval.[2] Scouting missions were also dispatched as the Emperor's relative was given the honorific title of "Ceo", one who wields the Legacy for the good of the Empire, the living embodiment of Ted Faro, the Renewer. At this point, the Ceo was believed by the entire tribe that he would be able to save them.[1]
Crossing the Great Ocean[]
The journey east was perilous, with many soldiers being lost to hunger and disease. At some point during the journey, hurricanes[1][3] split the Eastern Expedition in two, with one half being able to successfully arrive in San Francisco, while the other half was sent off-course to the south, landing in the remains of Los Angeles, known in the present day as the Burning Shores.
At the Isle of Spires[]

Legacy's Landfall.
The Eastern Expedition that successfully arrived faced problems as soon as they landed as their patrols were ripped apart by machines and they struggled to replenish their rations. Despite their difficulties, they were able to establish the settlement of Legacy's Landfall, locate Thebes, as well as travel further west to the mainland and discover the Greenhouse. Unfortunately, they were unable to enter Thebes, as the gene-locked door wouldn't open for them.[1]
The Ceo's dreams of saving the tribe were slowly being dashed by the major losses and slow progress, becoming more and more obsessed with Thebes and what lay behind its door, as well as becoming convinced that the title of Ceo was no mere honorific, eventually beliving himself to actually be the reincarnation of Ted Faro himself. His underlings,[1] including Bohai,[2] could tell that the Ceo's sanity was questionable, but feared speaking out as the Ceo wouldn't hesitate to have them executed.[1]

Aloy and Alva searching through data in the Greenhouse.
A breakthrough came around a year later[3] at the Greenhouse, where a Quen scouting team chanced upon Aloy, a clone of Elisabet Sobeck. While the soldiers at the site saw her as a "barbarian" and made the fatal mistake of attacking her, Alva, the Diviner on-site, realized her value, and the two worked together to access the ruin's data core, providing the Quen with thousands of agricultural archives. When reinforcements arrived, the Diviner talked them down, convincing them that Aloy was Elisabet Sobeck reborn and allowing her to leave before the rest of the expedition could take her.[4]

The Ceo, with Aloy, Alva and some soldiers within Thebes.
As the surviving Quen at the Greenhouse returned to Legacy's Landfall, Alva was sent to the Digsite before it was cut off from Legacy's Landfall by an Apex Thunderjaw. Around this time, Aloy made the journey to Landfall, in search of Ted Faro's Omega Clearance within Thebes. With her help, the Quen were finally able to defeat the Apex Thunderjaw and enter Thebes. However, it did not contain the answers they sought, instead the Ceo discovered the grotesquely mutated and still alive Ted Faro within the bunker's reactor. Disgusted by what he saw and upset that this contradicted his claims to be the reincarnated Ted Faro, he ordered the real Ted Faro incinerated and Aloy and Alva killed. His soldier was successful in killing Ted Faro, which triggered the bunker's self-destruct protocol. The only people who were able to escape were Aloy and Alva.[5]
Once safe, Aloy and Alva were interrogated by Bohai, demanding answers. Aloy was able to convince him that they had found what they needed to help not just the Quen homeland, but everywhere, and to let her go so that he could take credit once things start to improve.[5] With the Ceo gone, Bohai took command of the Eastern Expedition[6] and had Alva leave with Aloy to report back on her progress.[5]

Alva and Aloy searching for data on Leviathan.
Alva had Aloy help her recover data on Leviathan,[7] a spawling network of river gates and a labyrinth of underground tunnels used by the Old Ones to control flooding that was discovered decades ago at the Great Delta. However, the whole system had been shut down and the Quen were never able to reactivate it.[8] With this new data, Alva was hopeful that it would prove useful in reactivating Leviathan and using it to control the flooding back home.[9]
After helping Aloy defeat the Zeniths, Alva returned to Legacy's Landfall[10] to tell Bohai about the impending arrival of Nemesis, as well as giving him a new Focus.[11] Following this, Bohai and most of his half of Eastern Expedition set sail aboard a single ship to return to the Great Delta,[10] promising to petition the Emperor to send them aid.[11] Following Bohai's departure, Alva began quietly teaching some of the remaining Quen at the Isle of Spires how to use a Focus, telling them that it's okay to have one[12] despite the fact that only Diviners are allowed them by law.[13]
At the Burning Shores[]

Fleet's End.
The Eastern Expedition that were sent off course to the south found themselves in the Burning Shores. With Admiral Gerrit taking command, they faced troubles, made worse by uncooperative members of the expedition. They were able to establish a makeshift settlement, naming it Fleet's End in their low spirits.[3]
A group were sent on a scouting mission, but failed to return. Unbeknownst to those back at Fleet's End, they had encountered Walter Londra. As an Ancestor, they saw him a beacon of hope as he took them under his wing, convincing them to abandon the Eastern Expedition and become his followers.
Around a year after landing, while on a lone hunting mission,[3] Seyka encountered Aloy as she arrived at the Burning Shores atop a Sunwing, being shot out of the sky by Londra's Defense Drone. Seyka decided to bring Aloy back to Fleet's End with her to try and convince the Admiral to allow them a chance to find their missing people. Despite Rheng's objections, Admiral Gerrit allowed the two to undertake the mission.[14]
After Beta told Alva about the missing half of the Eastern Expedition[15] and Aloy and Seyka were able to send at least some of the Quen that abandoned Fleet's End back[16][17][18] and defeat Londra within a reactivated Horus, Aloy put Seyka into contact with Alva, allowing them to begin plans to reunite with the rest of the Eastern Expedition.[19]
