ELEUTHIA-9 is a long-defunct Cradle created as part of the ELEUTHIA program of Project Zero Dawn located within All-Mother Mountain in the heart of Nora territory. Its outer doors, sealed with a genetic lock, are worshiped by the Nora tribe as the embodiment of their deity All-Mother.
Description[]
ELEUTHIA-9 contains all of the facilities necessary for child-rearing and development. This includes artificial wombs for gestation, nurseries, a preschool area that functioned as a playground, toys, and living quarters for the inhabitants.
ELEUTHIA-9 was managed by multiservitors, which comprised of a robotic endoskeleton and a holographic "skin" of a human, in order to simulate a human parent, and would switch between three different personas, Mother being the nurturer, Father being the disciplinarian, Healer being the nurse.[1] There were also Sentinels, which were designed to physically punish the children.[2]
Within ELEUTHIA-9 is a massive, three-floored room called the Lyceum, where the inhabitants were intended to partake in APOLLO via an augmented reality gamified curriculum. To facilitate this curriculum, a number of Focuses were provided within the Lyceum. With the purging of APOLLO, the Lyceum never opened up to the humans born in ELEUTHIA-9.
To simulate the cycle of day and night, the lights within ELEUTHIA-9 would dim or brighten depending on the time of day.[3]
ELEUTHIA-9 had a limited food supply (enough to last until the people within were nearing adulthood).[4]
ELEUTHIA-9 currently exists in a low-power state. While the majority of the systems remain operational, the multiservitors are currently inactive, the food has been depleted, and the lights remain at a dim level. The walls of the hallways inside are covered in the drawings made by humans born within, depicting various elements of the life inside.
History[]
In the Old World[]
ELEUTHIA-9 was one of numerous Cradle facilities worldwide as part of the ELEUTHIA function of Project Zero Dawn, constructed within Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado.[5]
In the New World[]
24th century[]
Once the Earth had been restored to a habitable state in the early 24th century,[6] ELEUTHIA-9 began creating humans in synthetic wombs to reintroduce humanity to the world. The first generation of new humans was gestated successfully,[7] with at least two boys and two girls, one of the girls being named Lena.[2] These children were placed in the care of autonomous multiservitors who served as parental figures for them.[8]
The first stages were successful: the children received proper care and a nursery-level education,[9] However, problems began to occur when the children were receiving a kindergarten-level of education.[10] The next stage, releasing the children into the Lyceum to live in a more age-appropriate space and partake in APOLLO, never occurred. With Ted Faro's purging of the APOLLO database, APOLLO was unable to continue their education, and the door to the Lyceum never opened, trapping the children in the area only intended for very young children. As the children grew, additional problems began to arise, with the children becoming increasingly frustrated with the multiservitors for their situation,[11] constantly being told to wait for things that never seemed to ever come,[3][2] and refusing to allowed into the Lyceum with no explanation as to why not.[2]
On March 16, 2326,[6] with the children in their late teenage years,[12] the food supplies in ELEUTHIA-9 were depleted. With no other option, a multiservitor running the mother persona released the teenagers into the wilds. When one of them asked what would happen to her, the mother multiservitor replied that she would stay there, sleep, and remember all of them. When another asked what would happen to them, the multiservitor replied that they would be brave and they would learn.[4] Once all of the teenagers had left, the doors of the Cradle were sealed, and ELEUTHIA-9 entered a dormant state.[6]
These humans would become a proto-tribe, which would eventually split into several tribes on the continent, including the Carja, Oseram, Banuk, Utaru and Tenakth.[13] The Nora, however, remained in the surrounding land, which they dubbed the Sacred Lands, with the rest migrating either north or westward. The Nora came to view the Cradle door as their goddess, naming it "All-Mother." Their ancestors' experiences would shape their religion and way of life, especially their worship of motherhood. While other tribes have been documented on the continent,[note 1] it remains unknown if these tribes also descend from those born within ELEUTHIA-9.
31st century[]
On August 26, 3020, almost 700 years after ELEUTHIA-9 entered dormancy, a signal sent by Nemesis turned all of GAIA's subordinate functions into independent AIs. To prevent the HADES subordinate function from taking control of the terraforming system, GAIA ordered the self-destruction of GAIA Prime. Knowing that the system would eventually break down without a main governing AI, GAIA ordered ELEUTHIA-9 to gestate a clone of Elisabet Sobeck, her creator. Once gestated, this clone would be released to the tribe outside, be raised to maturity, and return to the place of her birth, where she would view a message from GAIA with one of the Focuses in the Lyceum, learn her purpose, and use the Cauldron facilities to rebuild GAIA Prime. However, to escape GAIA's self-destruction, HADES unleashed a virus, unshackling the subordinate functions from GAIA and allowing them to escape. Additionally, data throughout GAIA's system was corrupted, including the Alpha Registry file that would allow Elisabet's clone to access ELEUTHIA-9. Regardless, GAIA believed that "Elisabet" would find a way.[14]
Within ELEUTHIA-9, Multisevitor B1-23 was tasked with carrying out the task ordered by GAIA, once it was repaired. A zygote containing Elisabet Sobeck's genetic profile was placed inside Chamber B1-001, and began gestation. Just over seven months later, on April 4, 3021, the child was delivered, and placed outside the doors of the Cradle. Multiservitor B1-23 returned to the cradle, collapsing shortly after as ELEUTHIA-9 sealed itself again and re-entered dormancy.[6]
Hearing the child's cries, the High Matriarchs found her lying in front of the door. While High Matriarch Teersa believed that the child was a gift from All-Mother, other Matriarchs, especially High Matriarch Lansra, feared that the girl was a curse, placed there by some darker power.[15] The Matriarchs, fearing the girl, ultimately decided that she couldn't be raised by the tribe, instead allowing the outcast Rost to raise her instead.[16]
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
Nearly two decades later, after Aloy narrowly survived the Eclipse's attack on the Proving, Teersa brought her before the entrance to ELEUTHIA-9. The entrance performed an Identiscan on Aloy, but due to the Alpha Registry corruption, it denied her entry. Taking this as a sign from All-Mother, Teersa, with the support of High Matriarch Jezza, made Aloy a Seeker to find a way to "heal" the corruption.[17]
Eventually, Aloy returned to thwart the Eclipse's attempted genocide of the Nora and to enter ELEUTHIA-9. This time, with the uncorrupted Alpha Registry she acquired from the Zero Dawn Project Facility, the system successfully identified her as Dr. Elisabet Sobeck and allowed her entry to the Cradle facility. As she explored the facility with Sylens watching through her Focus, she discovered several datapoints, revealing the lives of the children who lived within centuries ago. Ultimately, she found GAIA's message, leaving her in shock about her origins. As Aloy left the facility, the Nora took this as a sign that she was the Anointed of All-Mother.[18]
While talking to Varl about what happened when she went into ELEUTHIA-9, she offered to bring him inside, which he was very hesitant about.[19]
Horizon Forbidden West[]
ELEUTHIA-9 and the children within were discussed by Aloy and Varl after Varl finished reading the datapoints that Aloy found in Nora territory and All-Mother Mountain. Varl brought up how hard it was believe that his ancestors were trapped ELEUTHIA-9 without the knowledge of APOLLO to guide them, and imagined how the world must've seemed so beautiful upon being released and how they became the Nora tribe, while Aloy believed that they must've been terrified seeing the world for the first time due to their young age.[20]
