"And that door. Looks like a Faro facility. Or Zero Dawn?"
―Aloy in LATOPOLIS

Death's Door is the fifth main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

Synopsis[]

Aloy follows the coordinates Sylens gave her, bringing her to a workshop built beneath a Horus. Sylens left behind a message for Aloy, revealing that he trapped HADES within the Horus's detached processing orb and interrogated it for intel.

Aloy follows the trail of the orb to a Faro facility called LATOPOLIS, where she finds HADES in the orb. Left ruined and degraded by the interrogation, HADES can do little more than taunt Aloy, telling her that GAIA is dead and life is doomed. Unable to extract any useful data from it, Aloy activates the Master Override and purges HADES for good.

Once this is done, Sylens contacts Aloy via hologram. In light of Sylens' recent conduct (particularly his deception), Aloy is less than pleased. Sylens, dismissive of both her frustrations and suspicion, reveals that the facility behind her was where HADES was perfected, and almost certainly contains hundreds of GAIA backups.

Aloy manages to get inside (although she first has to construct an Igniter to clear the Firegleam growth on the door), and finds the facility heavily flooded. She manages to make her way to the inner gene-locked latch, where the backups are stored within a massive contraption called "RECLUSE SPIDER". Unfortunately, centuries of water damage have corroded all but two of the repository, both of which are void of the subordinate functions. After an initial moment of frustration, Aloy realizes that she could use the original subordinate functions to rebuild GAIA piece by piece. Using LATOPOLIS's scanner, she manages to locate MINERVA in the mountains west of Plainsong.

However, an alarm sounds, and Sylens confesses that he sent out a signal: while he doesn't specify who the intruders are, he claims they are very powerful and wish to restore the terraforming system, which they will need Aloy for. Incensed at Sylens deceiving her again, Aloy vows to kill him once she has restored GAIA, destroying her Focus and replacing it with one free of his spyware.

To Aloy's shock, the intruders open the gene lock on the door, forcing her to hide. Four humans enter the chamber (one of whom is another clone of Elisabet Sobeck), accompanied by several Specters. As the clone, Beta, retrieves the second intact GAIA kernel, Aloy's cover is blown. One of the intruders, who appears to be the leader, orders another, Erik, to kill Aloy, and leaves with the other two.

Aloy quickly realizes that Erik is somehow invulnerable to her attacks: with no other option, she breaks the supports for RECLUSE SPIDER, causing to fall through the chamber's floor: while Erik is stunned, Aloy escapes into the flooded area below, evading Specters as she tries to flee LATOPOLIS.

Aloy eventually finds a way out, but accidentally triggers a structural collapse, violently ejecting her from the facility in a powerful current. She washes up, wounded and barely conscious, on the shore just outside. She is found by a healed Varl (whom she initially hallucinates to be Rost), but she blacks out seconds later.
