This page contains a list of all cut quests, as well as other notable changes that some quests in the final game went through during the development of the Horizon series.
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
Cut Quests[]
Challenge at Valleymeet[]
Lut, who appears to have been the quest giver of Challenge at Valleymeet.
As revealed in the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, a cut quest known as "Challenge at Valleymeet" had Aloy being challenged by Lut to obtain a Blazing Sun at the Valleymeet Hunting Grounds in order to beat his time.[1]
Lodge A Complaint[]
Ukan, who appears to have been the quest giver of Lodge A Complaint.
Within the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, there is a file intended to be a list of relevant text for a quest that appears to be named "Lodge A Complaint". The quest appears to have involved Aloy lodging a complaint at the Hunters Lodge after an interaction with Ukan. However, no such quest exists in the final game, with the aforementioned file being the only known one related to it that's been found.[2] The quest appears to have been recycled into the optional conversation with Ukan in Meridian found in the final game.
Rost's Grave[]
Rost's Grave.
As revealed in the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Aloy visiting Rost's Grave was a quest, as opposed to an optional conversation she could have at Rost's Grave.[3]
Trial and Error[]
Cren, who appears to have been the quest giver of Trial and Error.
As revealed in the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Aloy meeting Cren and learning about the Nora Hunting Grounds was meant to be its own quest called "Trial and Error". The quest involved Cren being injured at the Hunting Grounds.[4]
"Nora Hunter's Trade Request"[]
As revealed in the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, what appears to be a cut quest of no definitive name had Aloy collecting three Boney Meat (early name for Bony Meat), Fatty Meat, Meaty Meat, from boars and/or rabbits for a Nora Brave, and that they would share a stew together afterwards.[5]
Quest in the E3 2016 Gameplay Video[]
As shown in the E3 2016 Gameplay Video and mentioned by John Gonzales to be a different quest given by Marea during A Seeker at the Gates (see below), where Marea notes that they haven't heard from Mother's Rise in two days, to which Aloy agrees to check on them as it's on her way to the border.[6] On her way, Aloy rescued a Nora running away from a corrupted Watcher. After destroying the machine, Aloy would learn that they had come from Mother's Rise and that a demon and corrupted machines had attacked the village. The demon had come from the forest and corrupted a group of Watchers. Aloy tells the Nora to run to Mother's Crown, refusing to go with him as she doesn't believe in demons and doesn't run when lives are at stake. The player choses not to ask about other survivors.[7]
Knowing she won't make it in time on foot, Aloy overrode a Broadhead and rushed to Mother's Rise. Once there, she witnessed a Corruptor corrupting a Watcher, which she quickly killed before killing the Corruptor. Aloy notes that the Corruptor looks ancient and wonders where it came from. The video ends here.[7]
This quest has a noticeable continuity difference compared to the final game, as Aloy is encountering corrupted machines and a Corruptor for the first time and has already obtained an override module,[7] despite being in an area inaccessible until after these events take place in The Womb of the Mountain, indicating that the story up to this point was different. Additionally, the village seen in the video later becomes the Forsaken Village in the final game, while the name "Mother's Rise" is used for a different settlement.
Quest Line Taking Place in the Claim[]
The Claim.
Ben McCaw has confirmed that the biggest or coolest thing he wished made it to the final game in Horizon Zero Dawn was a quest line would take Aloy to the Claim, where she would "shake things up a bit".[8] Nothing more is known about this cut quest line.
Potential Cut Hunters Lodge Chain of Quests[]
In the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, there appears to files consisting of lists of objectives for an early chain of three quests with no known names. The first has Aloy talk to Larry and hunt and collect trophies from a Direwolf, Greywolf (both early names for the Sawooth/Ravager) and Stalker,[9] the second has her hunt and collect trophies from a Phoenix, Raptor (early name for a Thunderjaw) and ShieldLizard,[10] the third being her final exam where she has to hunt and collect trophies from a Thunderhawk (early name for the Stormbird) and Stormbringer.[11]
The Hunters Lodge.
This chain of quests appears to be an early version of the quest chain featuring the Hunters Lodge (Hunting for the Lodge to Redmaw). However, besides hunting for trophies, nothing more is known about them.
Potential Cut Quest in the E3 2016 Trailer[]
A Banuk shaman leading Aloy through a ruin in a potential cut quest in the E3 2016 Trailer.
In the E3 2016 Trailer, there appears to be parts of cutscenes from a cut quest, where Aloy is knelt before a Banuk shaman in what appears to be a ruin with candles, then standing up and telling the shaman they they could help or get out of her way. After a black fade, the shaman is shown leading Aloy through a corridor in the ruin.[12]
Missing Quest Prefixes[]
In the subtitle files in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, quests are given prefixes consisting of two or three letters, followed by a two-digit number. These prefixes include mq01 to mq16,[13] tca01 to tca03, tcb01 to tcb13,[14] tcc01,[15] tcd01[16] to tcd15,[17] tna01[18] and tna02, tnb01[19] to tnb11,[20] tnc01,[21] tnd01[22] to tnd16,[1] tsa01 and tsa02. However, at least 21 are missing, including tcd05, tcd06, tcd10 to tcd14, tnb06 to tnb10, tnd03 to tnd08, and tnd12 to tnd14, indicating these quests were cut and their files were either removed or never created.
As for The Frozen Wilds, they have the same system with "dlc1_" at the beginning, including dlc1_tba01 to dlc1_tba03, dlc1_tbb01 to dlc1_tbb05, dlc1_tbd01 to dlc1_tbd06. Out of these, the only known one missing is dlc1_tbb03, indicating that at least one quest was cut and its files were either removed or never created.
Tribe Quests[]
Tribe Quests were not part of the Main Quest flow, however, if the player passed a certain point in the Main Quest, some Tribe Quests would become obsolete and would have been prematurely stopped or deleted from the player's log, which led to issues in the playtest and confusion from the playtesters. Wanting to avoid players feeling like something was taken off their list without them knowing, Tribe Quests were incorporated into the Main Quests. This was a big decision that affected both the writers and designers.[23]
Changed Quests[]
A Gift from the Past and Lessons of the Wild[]
A Gift from the Past.
Early drafts for the story had Aloy finding the Focus as an adult instead of as a child, revealing that these quests were radically different, if not completely absent. This was changed due to the heavy backlash from the design team, as these early drafts meant that the game's user interface would not appear until the third hour of gameplay.[24][25]
The Point of the Spear[]
The Point of the Spear.
Originally, The Point of the Spear was a short, linear story where Aloy simply goes from one place to another. However, because of the story flow at this point in development, it would take the player three to four hours to access the open world, which was felt to be too long. As such, The Point of the Spear was completely redesigned to instead be the time when the open world is first accessed, with the hunting of the Sawtooth being added later.[23]
The Womb of the Mountain[]
The Womb of the Mountain.
As revealed in the subtitle files for The Womb of the Mountain in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Aloy was supposed to be able to find a reliquary of High Matriarch headdresses going back centuries, arranged on the walls of All-Mother Mountain in the order of the women who wore them.[26] However, no such headdresses can be found in the final game.
Additionally, the titles of the subtitle files reveal that an early name for The Womb of the Mountain was "Aftermath".[26]
A Seeker at the Gates[]
A Seeker at the Gates.
During development, A Seeker at the Gates appears to follow a very different path. Aloy, having taken down two packs of corrupted machines south of Mother's Crown, meets with Marea and reports on the corruption driving the machines mad. Marea believes that it was a curse only the goddess could lift. There are two other dialogue options, that appear to indicate that Marea plans to leave Mother's Crown, and that Aloy could suggest an evacuation. However, this are not selected in the video.[6]
Aloy makes her intent to reach the border by nightfall clear, to which Marea askes Aloy why she wants to leave the Sacred Lands, but Aloy shuts her down. Marea notes that they haven't heard from the nearby village of Mother's Rise (the early development name for Forsaken Village) for two days, to which Aloy agrees to check on them as it's on her way, which is by John Gonzales mentioned be a different quest given by Marea. As Aloy leaves Mother's Crown, she passes the body of a dead corrupted Thunderjaw.[6]
The Heart of the Nora[]
A non-operational multiservitor.
As revealed in the subtitle files for The Heart of the Nora in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, a multiservitor was planned to appear as a character during The Heart of the Nora, welcoming Aloy within ELEUTHIA-9, with the only line found being "Welcome….".[27] However, this was cut and none of the multiservitors that can be found within the facility speak to Aloy in the final game, or are even functioning.
The Face of Extinction[]
As revealed in the subtitle files for The Face of Extinction in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, the dialogue between GAIA and Elisabet was planned to be slightly longer, with GAIA greeting Elisabet at the start and Elisabet mentioning that she had wanted to have a child and doesn't feel content because she hasn't, despite believing it to not to make sense as having a child is "just such a… stupid… human thing."[13]
A Daughter's Vengeance[]
A Daughter's Vengeance.
A Daughter's Vengeance appears to have had a somewhat different plot compared to the final version with multiple cut characters.
As found in the localization files for Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, it appears that early plans for this quest had Aloy encountering Musas upon arriving at Daytower, where she would ask him if he was part of Zaid's unit and where she could find his commander. Musas would be very short with his answers to Aloy's following questions, denying having heard about Nakoa, saying it doesn't matter what he thinks of Zaid, and denying having raided the Nora with Zaid during the Red Raids. When Aloy asked if anyone else knows Zaid well, he pointed her towards Saravad, the quartermaster.[28][29] What would've happened after this point is unknown.
Begin the Hunting Trials[]
In the final game, the title of the quest Begin the Hunting Trials appears upon getting close enough to a Hunting Grounds for the first time, although is not actually a selectable or completable quest. However, as seen in Horizon Zero Dawn – The making of the game (2017), it was originally a selectable quest, one where Aloy has to find the Grounds Keeper.[30]
Cause for Concern - Farewell[]
As revealed in the subtitle files in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Cause for Concern - Farewell was planned to be a much longer quest originally, encompassing all the base game bandit camps and conversations with Nil. Additionally, the titles of the subtitle files reveal that an early name for the quest was "Killing Bandits for Fun".[20]
It appears that at one point, there were plans for Killing Bandits for Fun to be split into multiple quests, one for each bandit camp, with "Cause for Concern - Devil's Thirst", "Cause for Concern - Gatelands", "Cause for Concern - Shattered Kiln" being listed in a file with text associated with Killing Bandits for Fun.[20]
Shortage of Supplies[]
Shortage of Supplies.
As revealed in the subtitle files of Shortage of Suppllies in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Aloy was originally meant to hunt a Broadhead (known as a Longhorn at that point in development[31]), instead of a Lancehorn.[32]
Additionally, the titles of the subtitle files reveal that Shortage of Supplies was originally named "Short of Supplies".[32]
Hunters Lodge Quests[]
Redmaw.
It appears that Redmaw's name was originally planned to be Blacklash.[33] Accordingly, the side quest Redmaw was originally named Blacklash.[14]
Different Names for the Quests[]
As revealed in the titles of the subtitle files for various quests in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, many quests had different names during development, some likely intended as placeholders, such as:
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds[]
Into the Frozen Wilds/The Shaman's Path[]
Into the Frozen Wilds.
The Shaman's Path.
As revealed in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Into the Frozen Wilds and The Shaman's Path were originally one quest.[57]
Additionally, while making her to way to the Shaman's Path, Aloy would've stumbled upon a crime scene with broken tents and frozen bodies. One of the bodies was that of a shaman and that they died from a cryo attack.[57] What would've happened from this point is unknown.
As seen in the Launch Trailer for The Frozen Wilds, an early version of The Shaman's Path is shown, revealing that the first Control Tower was originally planned to have been accompanied by two Scorchers, as opposed to the Longlegs and Scrappers in the final game.[58]
For the Werak[]
For the Werak.
As revealed in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, there were two cut scenarios that would've been the opening for the final fight against the three Frostclaws:
One cut scenario had Aratak already fighting the Frostclaws alone with several dead Banuk around him, in desperate need of help. Aloy's objective would've been to save him and fight off the machines, with Aratak wielding a weapon that synergizes with the player's ability.[59]
The other cut scenario had Aloy investigate strange sounds she heard on the trail. As she reached the final area, she would've found three Frostclaws are attacking observers. As Aloy readied herself to take them out, Aratak would zipline down and team up with her to take down the machines.[59]
Additionally, For the Werak was originally named The Challenge.[60]
It appears that at least some of the narration, in the Launch Trailer for The Frozen Wilds, which was done by Aloy and Aratak, was taken from a conversation between them as/after Aloy challenges Aratak in an early version of For the Werak, as their dialogue lines up perfectly with their mouth movement in the scenes shown from the quest, which are also slightly different from the final version. Below is a transcript of this conversation between them:[58]
- ARATAK: Always these frozen wilds have punished us with biting cold and deadly steel, but never like this. New terrors driven by an evil shrouded in smoke and ash. So many have died. I fear even the spirits have forsaken us.
- ALOY: We don't need spirits; we need answers. Track this evil to its source, and we can kill it.
- ARATAK: *scoffs* A demon that frenzies the machines, how do you kill that?
- ALOY: It's kind of my specialty.
Firebreak/The Forge of Winter[]
Firebreak.
As revealed in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Firebreak and The Forge of Winter were originally one quest named Pressure Point.[60]
The Forge of Winter.
During this quest, Aloy would've been given the choice to sneak past the machines to reach the Cauldron door or fight through them. After hacking the door, Aloy, Ourea and Aratak would've needed to defend it against waves of machines while a timer counts down. Once inside Cauldron EPSILON, Aloy, Ourea and Aratak would've encountered a half constructed Fireclaw, where Aratak would suggest they should destroy the printing vat, while Ourea would insist they must urgently move on. Finally, rather than finding recorded messages left by CYAN, they would've had a four way conversation with her to learn how to reach the core.[60]
Horizon Forbidden West[]
Cut Quests[]
Quest Taking Place on the Graypeak[]
The localization files for Horizon Forbidden West reveals what appears to be a quest that took place on the Greypeak.[61]
The quest appears to involve Aloy being sent to the Greypeak by Mestokka to follow up on Dratekko's rescue mission of some Tenakth soldiers after a collapse in the tunnels (possibly called the "Razor Way") under the Greypeak. It seems that the Tenakth soldiers were destroying Clamberjaws, which attracted an Apex Slaughterspine, forcing them to take shelter in a tunnel, which subsequently collapsed. Aloy managed to find three survivors (Dratteko, Charatta, and one unnamed). Charatta appears to have injured her legs and is unable to fight, but Aloy was able to destroy the machine alone. The tunnel was able to be cleared, allowing Aloy to leave the area through it.[61][note 2]
Horizon Forbidden West State of Play Quest[]
The Horizon Forbidden West State of Play featured a quest[62] with no known name.[63]
As Aloy and her companions were combing through ruins to find technology needed to help them stop the Red Blight, Erend and a team of Oseram had been sent to the Isle of Spires to find a crucial piece of technology. Right after finding it, they encountered Regalla's rebels (referred to as raiders during the State of Play), who captured Erend and left the rest of his team injured or dead.[63]
A raider riding a Clawstrider.
Aloy finds Erend's camp infested with raiders.
Aloy arrived and heard about what happened from a surviving Oseram. When she saw the raiders, she was surprised to see that they have the ability to ride Clawstriders. She then found Erend being dragged along by raiders alongside more Clawstriders and a Tremortusk. Following them, she came across a group of raiders looting Erend's camp, shortly before killing all of them.[63]
Aloy facing the Tremortusk.
Making her way towards the broken bridge, overriding her own Clawstrider on the way, Aloy arrived at where Erend was being held. As she made a run for Erend, the Tremortusk confronted her, forcing her to destroy it and kill the remaining raiders.
Erend and Aloy looking at the approaching supercell storm.
With the danger now dead, Aloy freed Erend and he gave her the piece of technology he found. Aloy wondering out loud where the device will take then, the two used their Focuses to discover that the device contained a map of the world, showing the wind patterns and supercell storms currently taking place. The two looked nervously at each other as a supercell storm approached, with Erend noting that Aloy always said that a storm was coming.[63]
This quest was likely intended to act solely as a gameplay demonstration and never intended to be in the final game, given its somewhat rushed narrative, and multiple continuity clashes with the final game, as Aloy first discovers that the rebels can ride machines[64] and the Red Blight and supercell storms are mitigated[65][66] long before Aloy can reach the Isle of Spires.
Changed Quests[]
The Point of the Lance[]
The Point of the Lance.
As seen in a storyboard for The Point of the Lance, after speaking to Sylens, Aloy would briefly look at her reflection in a part of the Spire.[67] However, this never happens in the final game.
Gemini[]
Gemini.
The scene of the Sunwing flying over Aloy, Varl, Beta and GAIA's transport rig while traveling to Cauldron GEMINI appears in the Story Trailer for Horizon Forbidden West. However, Beta, as well as GAIA's transport rig and Charger are absent.[68] While unconfirmed, they may have been removed specifically for the trailer in order to avoid spoilers.
Others[]
Aloy and Varl outside Scalding Spear.
It appears that the developers were planning to have Varl visit Scalding Spear with Aloy at some point in the game, as he is present alongside her in concept art for the settlement. Whether this was intended to be part of a quest present in the final game or was part of a cut quest is unknown.
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores[]
Changed Quests[]
His Final Act[]
Aloy and Seyka in [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pow4g6g76M We almost forgot that this is the whole point 🥹
]
The YouTube short We almost forgot that this is the whole point 🥹 posted by Guerrilla Games appears to contain an unused scene from the final cutscene of His Final Act. In this scene, Aloy and Seyka hold hands and nuzzle each others' foreheads, which never occurs in-game.[69]
A Friend in the Dark[]
A Friend in the Dark as seen in the Launch Trailer, note the missing door and the datapoint to the left of Aloy.
The Launch Trailer for the DLC shows that A Friend in the Dark was originally somewhat different, with the locked door to the room where Olvar's body is located being absent. Additionally, a datapoint is located on the countertop to the left of the door, which isn't present in the final game.[70] Whether this is the datapoint For Ron (which is the only datapoint in this room in the final game) in an different location or this is a cut datapoint is unknown.
