This page contains a list of all other cut content that doesn't fit into any of the other cut content pages, as well as other notable changes during the development of the Horizon series.
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
Cut Content[]
Multiplayer[]
Two person multiplayer was discussed at the beginning of development,[1] as well as being capable of online multiplayer.[2] A very early prototype included this feature, but was ultimately cut because it would've had to come at the sacrifice of half of the other features intended to be in the game.[1]
Romances[]
The development team considered including romances for Aloy. However, this never panned out as they decided that Aloy is so consumed by her personal quest and huge dangers across the world that she didn't really have time to explore relationships yet. They remained open to exploring this side of her character in the future,[3] and did so in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores.
Changed Content[]
Fast Travel[]
At some point in development, during fast travel, there was an interface that showed Aloy traveling across the map to her destination, akin to a plane flying over a map. However, play testers noted that this system took too long, which defeated the point of the fast travel. This system also had a technical problem, where the icon would sometimes arrive at the destination before the game had finished loading, causing the game to hang on this screen until it finished loading. As such, this interface was cut and replaced with the loading hints in the final game.[4]
Machine Salvaging[]
During the first prototyping stages of development, there were plans for the entire machine to be salvageable instead of just a few components salvaged with the majority of the machine being abandoned. However, this would be too much for Aloy to carry, so developers planned to have her be able to shoot flares up, to which a nearby tribe would come flying in on a "giant flying wheel machine", climbing from with ropes to tie up the machine, lift it and bring it to the city. Aloy could then either go to the city to collect her resources, or have someone aboard the ship drop some coins down. It was ultimately cut due to its complexity, and due to it being ridiculous and not looking very plausible.[5]
This system was compared to the Fulton surface-to-air recovery system from Metal Gear Solid V.[5]
Project Zero Dawn[]
The logo of Project Zero Dawn.
Early in development, before the idea of the terraforming system came to be, John Gonzalez considered the idea that Earth would've been rehabilitated by human colonists from another world that had returned. However, this was quickly dropped as it couldn't explain the loss of human technological knowledge, nor did it feel suitably dramatic.[6] This idea may have later been recycled into Far Zenith.
At some point in development, the cult of the Eclipse were known as "Zero Dawn". However, as development continued, due to the Carja devotion to the sun, the developers realised that "Eclipse" was a much more fitting name for them, while the name Zero Dawn was more fitting for Elisabet's project. While unsure, Ben McCaw believes that before this point, Project Zero Dawn was known as GAIA, simply as the terraforming system, or something similar.[7]
Tall Grass[]
Tall grass in the E3 2015 Trailer.
As seen in the E3 2015 Trailer, tall grass originally had a different design, being mostly grass with small bits of red in it, as opposed to being fully red.[8]
Zip Line[]
As seen in the Gameplayer Trailer, the bracket Aloy uses on zip lines is absent, she instead travels on the zip line using just her hands.[9]
Horizon Forbidden West[]
Cut Content[]
Cauldron Conveyer Prototype[]
The Cauldron Conveyer Prototype (also note the strawberry icon in the bottom left).
Dennis Micka designed a Cauldron Conveyer Prototype to appear in Cauldrons, which Aloy could ride while fighting off machines,[10] but was cut for unknown reasons.
Micka believes that the Cauldron Conveyer Prototype helped him create the section of Cauldron IOTA where Aloy can ride on a Tallneck head as it's transported through the Cauldron.[10]
Changed Content[]
Medicinal Berry[]
Medicinal Berries.
The icon used to represent medicinal berries was originally represented with one that resembled a strawberry,[10] while in the final game, they are blueberries. See the above image for the Cauldron Conveyer Prototype to see it.
