This page contains a list of all cut machines, as well as other notable changes that some machines in the final game went through during the development of the Horizon series.

Horizon Zero Dawn[]

Originally the list of machines considered for Horizon Zero Dawn was over 50 machine long that was cut down to the final ones.[1]

Firebird[]

The Firebird was a cut machine, with its name being found on a list of item names and descriptions within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, with four resources associated with it also cut: the Firebird Heart, Firebird Lens, Firebird Uncommon Part B and Firebird Uncommon Part C.[3]

The Firebird may be the "fiery bird machine" described below by Ben McCaw.

"Giant Flying Wheel Machine"[]

The "giant flying wheel machine" was a cut machine that would be used by tribespeople to salvage destroyed machines for Aloy. See here for more details.[4]

Mathijs De Jonge confirms that the "giant flying wheel machine" was created, describing it to look like a "flying wheel pirate ship", and that it was used in the cinematic at some point.[4]

Phoenix[]

The Phoenix was a cut machine, with its name being found on within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, found on what appears to be a list of objectives for Deadliest Game as one of the machines Aloy has to hunt and collect a trophy from.

ShieldLizard[]

The ShieldLizard, also formatted Shieldlizard, was a cut machine from Horizon Zero Dawn, with its name being found on a list of item names and descriptions within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, with four resources associated with it also cut: the ShieldLizard Heart, ShieldLizard Lens, ShieldLizard Uncommon Part B and ShieldLizard Uncommon Part C.[5]

In what appears to be an early list of objectives for Deadliest Game, ShieldLizard was planned to be one of the machines Aloy would need to hunt and collect a trophy from.[6]

Shock Bellowback[]

The Shock Bellowback was a cut variant of the Bellowback, with its name found on multiple lists within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition,[7][8] along with a Corrupted Shock Bellowback.[7]

Stormbringer[]

The Stormbringer was a cut machine from Horizon Zero Dawn, with its name found within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition,[7] as well as being a machine Aloy had to hunt and obtain a trophy from in a cut quest.[9]

A machine based on a camel appears in early concept art for the Carja tribe.

Unnamed Eagle Machine[]

A machine based on an eagle was considered.[10] Whether this machine is actually the Stormbird is unclear.

Unnamed Tiger Machine[]

A machine based on a tiger was considered, but doesn't appear in the final game.[10]

Other Potential Cut Machines[]

Many lists can be found within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, with some having what could potentially be the names of cut machines, which such names including the:

Cut Corrupted Machines[]

A list with no discernible context has two corrupted machines listed that don't appear in the final game, those being the Corrupted Shell-Walker and the Corrupted Shock Bellowback (the base machine of which was also cut).[7]

Corrupted Shell-Walkers still exist within the game files and can be spawned into the world via mods.[12]

Other Cut Machines Variants[]

Snapmaw

Within a list of several items and descriptions found within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, a mysterious variant of machine appears as Cauldron machines, with the Cauldron Charger, Cauldron Snapmaw and Cauldron Watcher having been found listed.[8] The context of these machines is unknown.

Grazers

Within a list of relevant to a game test within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, what appears to be a variant of the Grazer (then known as the Harvester[13][14]) appears as the BlackHarvester.[11] The idea of a black variant of a machine may have served as inspiration for Apex machines.

Trampler

Within a list of relevant to a game test within the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, what appears to be a variant of the Trampler (then known as the Bison[13]) appears as the Alpha Male Bison.[11]

Changed Machines[]

As seen in preproduction concepts of the Corruptor, as well as the hologram associated with the FAS-ACA3 Scarab datapoint, the Corruptor was originally planned to have six legs, as opposed to the four it has in the final game.

Shell-Walker[]

As well as originally being named the Cargo Crab,[13] the Shell-Walker Crate was originally named the Cargocrate.[15]

Tallneck[]

Early concept art of a Tallneck.

Early concept art of a Tallneck.

As seen in early concept art for Horizon Zero Dawn, Tallnecks had a somewhat different design, having a large object on their back, somewhat resembling an airport surveillance radar.

Tallnecks were considered to be fightable, but this led to a lot of technical issues during development.[16]

As seen in the E3 2016 Gameplay Video, two Tallnecks were originally planned to be found in the Valleymeet. Interestingly, they are not depicted on the map.[15]

Shell-Walker

The Shell-Walker's name appears to have changed a few times during Horizon Zero Dawn's development, with Scuttler[17] being found that appears to refer to the Shell-Walker, as well as the confirmed early name of Cargo Crab.[13] Additionally, the Shell-Walker's name is formatted as Shellwalker in Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Freeze Bellowback

Freeze Bellowback

The Freeze Bellowback is listed as the Cryo Bellowback in the objective log of Tutorial: Shadow Sling,[18] likely another name for it that changed during development but left unchanged in this string of text.

Other Mountable Machines[]

As seen in concept art, the Grazer was planned to be mountable.

Additionally, other larger machines were able to mounted during the prototyping phase of development, which became very problematic due to incompatibilities with the system of having armor plates that can be shot off.[16]

Machine Sites[]

The map as seen in the E3 2016 Gameplay Video.

As seen in the E3 2016 Gameplay Video, some of the machine sites in the Valleymeet were different at that stage of development. A Strider site south of Mother's Rise (which later became the Forsaken Village) was later changed to a Broadhead site, a Watcher site was later added, and what appears to be a Grazer site was later removed.[15]

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds[]

Cut Machines[]

"Fiery Bird Machine"[]

A machine that Ben McCaw describes as a "fiery bird machine" was cut from Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds.[2]

The "fiery bird machine" may be the Firebird listed above, found in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition.[3]

Cut Daemonic Machines[]

Chargers

The Daemonic Charger was cut from Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, with its name found on a list with no discernible context.[7] They still exist within the game files and can be spawned into the world via mods.[citation needed]

Changed Machines[]

Different Names for the Machines[]

Fireclaw

As revealed in the localization files of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, the Fireclaw was originally named the "Lava bear".[19]

Horizon Forbidden West[]

Cut Machines[]

Apex Watcher[]

Watcher

While the standard Watcher only appears in cutscenes and holograms in the final game,[20][21][22] an unused Apex Watcher exists within the game files and can be spawned into the world via mods.[23]

Strider[]

A Strider in Horizon Forbidden West.

A Strider in Horizon Forbidden West.

While the Strider doesn't appear in final game, an image of one in-game can be found in the Tutorials section of the notebook, located in the Tutorials > Basic Tactics > Overriding Machines > Repairing and Reviving, showing that it was intended to be in the game before being cut.

Interestingly, the Strider is depicted with the same Cauldron icon as it was in Horizon Zero Dawn, which represented Cauldron SIGMA in that game, but represents Cauldron MU in Horizon Forbidden West.

Trivia[]

  • According to Dennis Zopfi, none of the machines that were attempted to be implemented to Horizon Zero Dawn were cut,[1][29] but this is clearly incorrect as some machines listed have been confirmed to have been initially in the game but were later cut, or have other evidence to suggest they were.
