"Look around. This may be the Sundom, but Chainscrape is all gears, rust, and bad ale."
Javad the Willing[1]

Chainscrape is a settlement located in the Daunt, primarily inhabited by the Oseram.

Description[]

Chainscrape road sign

A road sign for Chainscrape.

Chainscrape is a short walk from the lift that provides access to the Daunt from the east, and is situated along the river carving through the canyon.

Serving as an entry point into the Forbidden West for those daring enough to enter, Chainscrape holds much of the Daunt's Oseram population, many of whom are miners, loggers, or construction workers involved in the reconstruction of the nearby Barren Light.

History[]

NPC dialogue implies that what would later become Chainscrape was originally founded as a forward base of operations by the Tenakth, after they breached the Carja fortress of Barren Light and entered the Daunt. However, the Tenakth Chief, Hekarro, ultimately peacefully withdrew the Tenakth from the Daunt after the Red Raids came to an end. Afterward, Oseram hired to repair Barren Light settled in the former outpost, building upon the crude Tenakth architecture until all that was left of its initial appearance were the outer walls; thus creating the settlement of Chainscrape.[citation needed]

One of Chainscrape's earliest settlers was an Oseram named Ulvund. Seeing great potential in the settlement, he convinced multiple investors in The Claim to fund Barren Light's restoration as well as multiple mining operations throughout the Daunt. Over time, Chainscrape would grow considerably. Unfortunately, as Ulvund's influence grew, he started abusing his power. Proclaiming himself Chainscrape's "founder", he forced local businesses to give him and his followers "discounts" while subjecting miners to inhumane and dangerous conditions. However, Ulvund's investors were still skeptical of Chainscrape, as the Sun-King could potentially revoke any of their business deals due to the settlement being on their land.[2]

When Bristlebacks inexplicably appeared within the Daunt and posed a danger to the locals, Ulvund took advantage of the situation by accusing the Carja of deliberately letting the Bristlebacks into the Daunt to intimidate the Oseram into submission, and subsequently used his influence to force nearly all businesses in Chainscrape into a strike. He then approached the Daunt's overseer, Javad, with a deal: he would end the strike in return for him signing a concession putting all investments within the Daunt under Oseram law. After Aloy destroyed the Bristlebacks and discovered that they actually found their way into the Daunt through a sinkhole created by Ulvund recklessly using explosives in an unstable mine. Upon learning about this, Javad publicly confronted Ulvund about this, bringing to light his abuses toward Chainscrape's inhabitants and inhumane treatment of the miners. Knowing that he would certainly be found guilty if an investigation was launched into him, Ulvund cut his losses and left Chainscrape. The inhabitants were overjoyed, and Javad appointed Petra Forgewoman as the settlement's new leader.[1]

After the Order of Twilight lost their leader in Savohar, Aloy sent Lokasha and the surviving members to Chainscrape to find safety under Petra's care. Lokasha awaited a vision to reveal to her the Order's new home, but when no vision came, she came to believe that this was because they had already found their home in Chainscrape.[3]
