A Deathbringer refueling via biomass conversion.[1]
Biomass Conversion,[2][3][4] also known as Biomatter Conversation,[5] is a process by which organic matter is transformed into fuel. The process was developed and patented by Faro Automated Solutions (FAS).[3]
History[]
In the Old World[]
Biomass conversion was developed by FAS at the Greenhouse.[6] It works by expelling a black cloud,[1] described as a nano-haze, to strip organic matter layer by layer from something up to several meters away before returning it to the device it originated from, refueling it, all happening within a few seconds.[7][1][8] When used on a pod of dolphins, the sight was described as "a big pink swirling milkshake of dolphin chum",[5] while when used on plants, the cloud simply gains red glowing embers within it.[1][8] All organic matter is a suitable fuel source.[9]
Biomass conversion was utilized by FAS in its Chariot line of military combat robots, intended as an alternative fuel source in the event of fuel supply line interdiction[2] or other emergencies.[10] It was definitely incorporated into the Scarab[2] and Khopesh,[3] with conflicting evidence as to whether it was also incorporated into the Horus.[4][5]
When the Chariot swarm owned by the Hartz-Timor Energy Combine went rogue due to a glitch,[10] the robots utilized their biomass conversion capabilities to keep themselves fuelled and went onto rapidly start attacking everything around them[11] and expand around the world.[10] Thus the swarm, which became known as the Faro Plague, became an existential threat to life on Earth.[12]
When testing Adamantine Wreath as a possible way to stop the Faro Plague, biomass conversion was used on it to ensure its immunity from its effects,[8] which was successful. However, they weren't able to be deployed in time.[13]
In the New World[]
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
Biomass conversion has only been seen in use by the Chariot machines once, used by a Deathbringer shortly after reactivation.[1]
Horizon Forbidden West[]
Biomass conversation was accidentally activated in the Greenhouse by Aloy and Alva while searching for data in the Greenhouse. Fortunately, its effects were contained within the testing grounds.[8]
